Greyfriars Churchyard
In the heart of old Edinburgh, Scotland is Greyfriars churchyard,
a cemetery containing some of the most interesting and unusual funerary art I have ever seen. It's always a favorite place for me to go and shoot photos.
I love cemetery art, and
this moss-encrusted stone skull remains one of my favorite photos. I feel it
a sublime juxtaposition of
life and death.

In Greyfriars you see a
lot of skull and crossbones motifs, which prompted
one stupid American tourist
I overheard to say, "There sure are a lot of pirates buried here.."
Far too pretty to be a
pirate, this lovely lady
dates back to the 17th century.
This angel is the only pic
on this page not from Greyfriars. She is, in fact, in Highgate Cemetery in London. I was taken by the contrasts of the greenish and purple mold on the stone combined with the brillig blue sky and the dusting of snow.
