In Memory of

Sylvia Marie Likens

The pure, the beautiful, the bright,
That stirred our hearts in youth,
The impulse to a wordless prayer.
The dreams of love and truth,
The longings after something lost,
The spirit's yearning cry,
The strivings after better hopes.
These things can never die.

Sarah Doudney, 1843

On October 26th, 1965, God saved Sylvia Likens. Hearing her cries, God delivered her from the hands of her tormentors and torturers. On October 26th, 1965, Sylvia Likens died in a shabby rundown house in a poor section of Indianapolis. She died surrounded by evil. She died unheard. She died in silent agony. She was 16 years old.

Evil found Sylvia on the streets of Indianapolis in the summer of 1965.

Sylvia and her younger sister, Jenny were entrusted into the care of a single mother, Gertrude Baniszewski by their father. Unknowingly, he left Sylvia and Jenny in the hands of evil. Within four months, the police would be summouned to that house. They would find the body of Sylvia, emaciated, bruised and burned with over 100 cigarette and match burns. They would find the words, "I'M A PROSTITUTE AND PROUD OF IT"; burned by a heated sewing needle onto her stomach. Gertrude and her family, as well as neighborhood children, encouraged by Gertrude beat, humiliated, tortured, burned and starved Sylvia until her body could withstand no more. They murdered her.

In life, we failed Sylvia Likens. We did not listen to her cries. We did not see her pain.

In death, we remember Sylvia Likens. She died alone but she will never be forgotten. We remember the young girl with eyes full of hope and anticipation. This site is dedicated to the memory of Sylvia Likens.
