If it should be that I grow frail and weak, And pain should keep me from my sleep. Then, you must do what must be done For this, the last battle, can’t be won. Don’t let grief stay your hand For this day, more than rest Your love and friendship stand the test. We’ve had so many happy years, What is to come can hold no fear, You’d not want me to suffer, so When the time comes, please let me go. Take me where my needs they’ll tend, Only, stay with me to the end. And hold me firm and speak to me Until my eyes no longer see. I know in time you will see, It is a kindness you do for me. Although my tail it’s last has waved From pain and suffering, I’ve been saved. Don’t grieve, it should be you, Who this thing decides to do. We’ve been so close, we two, these years, Don’t let your heart hold any tears. |

| All of us who have animals have had to make some pretty hard decisions as they reached the end of their lives, or became too sick to have any quality of life. I had three beautiful cats, 2 Burmese, Sooty and Pepper and a magnificent honey coloured stray called Tiffy. Tiffy died at age 10 from a tumerous cancer of the throat. The Burmese both lived until they were 15. Pepper went first, with lung cancer and 4 months later I had to make the hardest decision of my life and let Sooty go too. Not only was she fretting for Pepper but she had lost all her flesh and couldn't eat or walk. I loved them all but she had been my friend and it broke my heart. My vet was a wonderful, kind, man and after Sooty died he sent me a card . The words which are printed below...helped me to cope and so I dedicate it to all the pets we have loved and lost and all those who will follow them. I know that they go on as we do....I know that all their pain and suffering is over...we are the ones who grieve because we miss them so. I hope this will help you to realise that when you take away their pain...you are putting them first, and helping them. Grieve of course, but never feel guilty.......what you do for them is done with love. |
