Drunken driver leaves tragedy in wake
My husband and I, who grew up in Akron's Firestone Park and graduated from Garfield High School, are missionaries in the Philippines, sent out by The Chapel. We were home last month, and I had the chance to visit with cousins from North Carolina who were in Akron for a family reunion. I hadn't seen them for three years, so it was a special treat.
Stan
and Roberta (Lees) Zuravel moved from Akron several years ago, and Stan had
since retired from the job that took him and his family away.
What
started as a wonderful trip back to North Carolina for them ended in tragedy. We
received word that Stan was killed by a drunken driver who'd been talking on his
cellphone just an hour away from their home in Fayetteville.
Roberta
was badly bruised, but OK. I can't even imagine the emotions that ran through
her as she reached out and realized her husband was dead. How can we make sense
of this tragedy?
Stan's
death is hard for me to accept. One day he was sitting in my moms living room,
talking and laughing with us -- so alive. And now he is gone because a man was
drunk and careless and selfish.
When
will people realize their actions can shatter another's world, causing
immeasurable pain and grief?
