History of Troop 8 |
The Beginning |

Surprising First Campout |
This first group of scouts conducted their first campout less than 45 days later at the January Klondike Derby at Pine Hill Scout Reservation. For the record, it did snow and Troop 8 was the only troop to stay in tents both nights that weekend. Cooking out over a campfire for the first time was made more challenging by the subfreezing weather, but the troop did eat that weekend and has not looked back since. |

Many Firsts |
There followed many firsts in that charter year. In Febuary, 3 Scouts made Tenderfoot. In March, 3 Scouts went on the troop's first hike in Pemberton, New Jersey, with 4 more Scouts hiking at Cooper River Park two weeks later. In April, the troop took it's first overnight backpacking on the Appalachian Trail. Still affectionately known as the "death march" for the weather and rocks endured, with 8 scouts and 2 Scoutmasters. |
The Troop's Jump Foward |
In June the Scouts did their first service project and several earned their first merit badge with a canoeing weekend at Pine Hill. Many more comepleted swimming requirements and the swimming merit badge at Barcly Farm Swim Club in July. Then it was off to Hawk Mountian Scout Reservation in the Pocono Mountians of Pennsylvania. Six scouts went on that first trip and worked on more than 20 merit badges. The troop's colors were unfurled for the first time in a flagging ceremony in front of the entire camp. The charter year troop members picked up the dark green neckerchief for their troop color in November of 2002. They were presented their neckerchiefs at the court of honor in Febuary of 2003. All Scouts and Scouters who joined during the charter year are authorized to wear the dark green neckerchief with the gold emblem and piping in honor of charter membership. All other scouts wear red piping and emblems on their neckerchiefs. In the fall of 2003, the troop saw it's first 3 kids advance to Star, and in the Spring of 2004, those same 3 scouts, Sam, and Joe and Josh were promoted to Life. Also in 2004, we moved our new home at Bethel Baptist Church on Springdale Rode in Cherry Hill. |
The Troop is Sucessful |
From those humble beginnings, it has been bigger and bigger ever since. We continued with 4 more trips to the Appalachian Trail, two more summer camps at Hawk Mountian, and have ranged North to the Delaware Water Gap, South to Aberdeen, Maryland, and West to Harrisburg, PA. While averaging at least 10 outings a year since that charter year. Hilights have included the Tank and Armor Museum in Aberdeen, a Rodeo in Harrisburg, a whitewater rafting trip in the Poconos, and trips to Ft. Indiantown Gap with visits to Cabela's Outdoor store. |
Looking to the Future |
As of early 2005, the troop has 20 scouts, 3 Assistant Scoutmasters, and a new Committee Chairman, and is determined to stay strong. The philosophy of the troop is to provide maximum opportunity for advancement and to "keep 'em in the woods". Leadership oppertunities abound and our Duty to God and Country is never forgotten. Trips for the future include Camp Davy Crockett in east Tennesse and Assateague Island National Park in Virginia. We invite all boys 11 to 18 to write their name in troop history as we look foward in the saga of ever growing Troop 8. |
