REPORT ON PROJECT AWARE

Saturday 15th June 2002

Hunting Cay – SCMR

Mangrove Planting, Coconut Planting, and Coconut Felling

Arrangements had been made with the Punta Gorda Methodist Scout Group and with the University of Belize (environmental students/interns for TASTE summer 2002) to be the task force on this exercise.

(300)Mangrove plants had been set to sprout.

 (75) dwarf coconuts had been donated.

These plants along with 10 scouts, 8 interns, 2 members of TASTE, a marine biologist, an ornithologist, and 4 adult volunteers set off for Hunting Cay at 7am.  The trip was made in a first class boat with a voyage time of 1 hour 15 minutes.  Everyone was told of safety procedures and wore their life vests.

The arriving team was met by the Sapodilla Cays Marine Reserve Staff; Manager, Biologist and Ranger.  After debarkation, a brief meeting was held to split the team into groups.

The biologist requested on the spot that ¾ of the mangrove should be planted on the eroding shore of Hunting Cay.  Since this was part of the original intent on other cays in the SCMR, no one objected.  Follow up projects will be developed and executed for the remaining sites. A team was prepared and sent to do this task.  Another team went to plant coconuts while yet another prepared to fell dead (unsightly) coconut trees.

During the hours that followed the following was achieved:

§  300 mangrove trees planted

§    75 coconut trees planted

§   25 dead trees felled, junked and removed to a pile

Special thanks go out too  Bernadette and Gregg.

To project AWARE for sponsoring, and to all participants

Two papers (handouts) were prepared and given to the participants. The contents of which were discussed and questions answered. The biologists were very active in sharing information with the youth. Once again, sandwiches, fruit, juice, and cake were enough to sustain the energies of the teams.

All objectives were achieved and further data was recorded for future effort.

304 trees yet to be felled
1000 more mangroves to be planted
More youth have come to know and appreciate the SCMR – A World Heritage Site
