Michael Schumacher managed to start where he finished 2001- on pole. The four time reigning World Champion finished ahead of his team mate Rubens Barrichello. The new talent showed itself in the first practise session with Fellipe Massa running at 5th place ahead of Coulthard (20th- 12 laps completed) and Montoya (11th- 12 laps). The session also saw the Renaults get into the Top 10 with Button and Trulli finished in 16th place (12 laps completed)
