The Leopards began way back in 1994 with their first game against Manchester Giants played at the newly relaunched London Arena in London's Docklands. A narrow victory started the BBL's newest franchise on its way. The team was made up mainly of ex Guildford players, joining them were Robert Youngblood and Henri Abraham from the USA. Several members of that team are still playing today, Carl Miller at Derby,Ronnie Baker at Towers,Julio Politti at Thames Valley and Karl Brown at Riders.Henri was cut halfway through the season to be replaced by Decarlo Devaux who introduced himself to the Arena crowd with a 360 degree dunk. Unfortunately in what was the first of many Leopards players to have links with WWF wrestling he impersonated Hacksaw Jim Duggan and his '2 by 4' at Derby's Moorway Centre and was promptly banned for 2 years. As this occurred after the transfer deadline we could not bring in a replacement and our Championship hopes were over. My most vivid memory of that first season was Mighty Martin Henlan tipping the ball into his own basket as time ran out to enable us to progress in the National Cup. No doubt every fan has a game or situation that sticks in their mind, share that memory with us all by telling us about it in the guestbook.
THE 1994/95 LEOPARDS TEAM
My what a good looking bunch they are! Ronnie Baker looking like a 19year old kid, Karl Brown assuming his normal position though unusually his arms are not out wide looking for a foul! Henri Abrams at the back looking mean and moody next to Robert Youngblood who just wanted to look cool. Adrian Jones seems to be the only one taken with a fish eye lens which expanded his waistline. Julio never seemed to really fit in but he shot over 40% from behind the arc so we let him stay! Clive Harriott was never a star but he worked very hard and played awesome 'D'. Finally a mention for the late Adrian Cummings, like Clive a hard working, quite shy, all around nice guy.
Some notable stats from the 1994/95 season.
Karl Brown 20 points per game, 4 assists, 39% 3 point shooting
Robert Youngblood 24 points per game, 8.5 rebounds, 39% 3 point shooting, 61% floor shooting
Henri Abrams 16 points per game, 10 rebounds, 2.5 blocks, 60% floor shooting
Memories of 1995/96
This season began with the arrival of Chris Fite and Greg Modzelewski from the now defunct team which holds the record for the longest name in BBL history, The John Carr Windows And Doors Doncaster Panthers.Between them they had combined for 36 points per game. They certainly did play well whenever they were on court together. The lowlight of the season was losing to Crystal Palace in the quarter final of the National Cup which proved to be Gregs last match after he threw up an ugly three point attempt after being told to take it inside. We ended the season with a 23:13 record and 4th position. This meant we played Manchester in the play offs. The first leg was in Manchester and it took a pair of free throws from Robert Youngblood as time ran out to take us into o/t where we went on to win by 4pts. Unfortunately we lost the 2 home legs to crash out and end our season.
Some more notable stats from the 1995/96 season
Karl Brown improved to 25 points per game
Robert Youngblood 20 points per game, 8 rebounds, 63% shooting
Ronnie Baker 10 points per game, 43% 3 point shooting
Chris Fite 15 points per game, 9.5 rebounds, 38% 3 point shooting
Clive Lindo 2 appearences, 0 points, 0 rebounds, 1 turnover.
Seems perfect for a Towers coach!

Memories From The Guestbook
It seems that the most popular memory so far is the legendary 21 point comeback against the London Towers. I dread to think how many times I have watched the tape of that game and the wife plays it when she has a mountain of ironing to climb, it inspires her I suppose! There are so many memorable moments If you haven't seen the game beg to borrow the tape off of someone. Eric Burks collapsing in a heap under the basket in the first half, me trying to find the lightswitch at halftime as I had seen enough but being held in my seat by Kevin Cadle's wife Pearly Gates desperately trying to carry a tune.Looking at Eric Burks returning in street clothes after half time  and thinking  are we ever going to get any luck against the Towers.Ronnie Baker suddenly aquiring rocket propelled boots and flying all over the place.Reggie Oblitey out cheerleading Martin Henlan and Roger Duhaney. Tim Davis fouling out and coming to stand with the Leopards fans and shout himself hoarse with the rest of us.Jim Brandon (ex Sharks, Giants and Rocks coach) going through the whole of the fourth quarter and overtime without mentioning Paul Munday Castles name, always "the young fella!". The timeout where Billy Mims kept the team on court as they couldn't hear him over the music and crowd, surely nobody could forget the sight of Rowan Thomson taking a chair into mid court for John White to sit on as he was exhausted. Robert Youngblood hurting his leg as the game neared it's conclusion and Jimmy Brandon shrieking "The Plot Thickens". But surely the overriding memory was John White taking hold of the game and just winning it virtually by himself, driving to the hoop, hitting foul shots and hitting some shots that had no right to even hit the backboard but nobody could guard the "Great White" that night. The interview after the game was just as entertaining as Tim Davis was repeating "thats my dawg" as John was talking. Rounded off with Reggie Oblitey pointing at John White and saying "we love this man .......and so do you!". He might not have been the most talkative person but in my opinion he is the best player I have ever seen in the British game.
I  would like to say a few words on the demise of the Manchester Giants franchise. The history of the Leopards and Giants are now forever linked as the first ever Leopards game and the last ever Giants game were between the two teams. Leopards won the first meeting and Leopards won the last meeting. But in between there have been some titanic battles between the teams and some strong friendships forged between the fans. Let's hope that in the 2002/03 season a Manchester team is back in the BBL. I fear that the chance of going to watch British basketball in the best arena in the land, the MEN Arena is gone forever. At least the memories will remain.
