Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity

Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity

The Missionaries of Charity was started by Mother Teresa in 1950 in Calcutta. Its purpose was to help the poorest of the poor of all religions by taking care of the impoverished, abandoned, and dying. They take these people in and care for them with love and help those who are dying to die with dignity. They have houses set up to take care of them, ane even though most of these people die under the care of the Missionaries, but they are not left out on the street to die like so many others. Members are given a place to work in the world, and do not choose themselves where to work. To join the order, candidates must be 18 and 35 years, guided by the right intention, healthy in body and mind to be able to endure the hardships of the vocation, able to acquire knowledge, such as acquiring the different languages of the people they serve, have a cheerful attitude, and able to exercise good judgement.

Mother Theresa

Agnes Gonxha Bejaxhiu was born in Skopje, the former capital of Macedonia, on August 27th, 1910. She moved to India where she entered the order of the Sisters of Loreto and took the name Teresa at the age of 18. She eventually became principal of the school, but in 1948, she left to work on her own. She received medical training in Paris and came back to India and opened some classrooms in Calcutta for destitute children. She started her order in 1950 and over time, more and more nuns joined her and her House for the Dying was opened in 1952. By 1957, she started work with lepers and in many disaster areas of the world. She received several recognitions for her efforts including the Pope John XXIII Peace Prize in 1971 and the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. She died on September 5th, 1997 in Calcutta.

Mother Teresa devoted her entire life to those in need with unwavering love. She helped those that no one else wanted to go near because of disease or being thought of as unclean. She was a Catholic, but she helped anyone who needed her help the most, no matter what their religion was. Jesus said that at the end of time, those who go to heaven and those who go to hell are separated by their actions unto the least of those. Mother Teresa's works are the perfect example of caring for the least of us.
