1. First look at the tuning of the song at the top of the tab. In this case it is "Standard Tuning". This means that the top string of your guitar will be tuned to E the next down will be A, then D, G, B, E. You will need to learn how to tune your guitar before playing, google and practice.

2. Each horizontal line on the tab is a string on your guitar. The bottom line, is the
top 'E' sting of your guitar. The next line up 'A', is the second string from the top. Then the 'D', then 'G', then 'B' and the top line 'E', is the bottom string of your guitar.

3. Each number is the fret that you play. Each '-' is time. The first note is 5 on the 'E' line or bottom string. This means that you would, place a finger of the left hand on the 5th fret of the bottom string, and strike that bottom string with your right hand (Assuming your right handed).

4. After that note is sounded move your fingers to the next frets (3,2). The 3 is on the 'B' line so you would, place a finger on the 3rd fret of the 'B' string (2nd string from the bottom). You would leave that finger on and place another finger on the second fret of the 'G' (3rd string from the bottom) for the 2. After you have both fingers down on those strings and frets you strike both strings at the same time with you right hand. You can either pluck with your fingers or use a pick and strum down the two strings.

5. Move on to the next frets and strings place you fingers down and strike. Keep on until the end where there are no numbers (Frets) and you have played a riff. Play over over and over again and you have a song.

Hints: Only strike the strings with fret numbers on them. Space inbetween the numbers is time(it's better to play along with the song for timing). The letters at the beginning of the lines are not always present (EADGBE) you are expected to know what strings these are when the Tuning is announced at the beginning of the tab. Don't worry about the letters in tabs for now.
