The Trailer Project |
October 7, 2003, I purchased a used Maxim Trailer. This is a used painted trailer and has considerable rust on and in the trailer tubing. The winch, stanchion, tongue stand, spare tire mount, galvanized brake lines and back plates, serge brake head/hitch, and axles, excluding the fenders, wheels, tires and STEEL are worth more than what I paid for the trailer. The cosmetics, the outside I will sandblast and reapint, but the inside of the tubes I can't do much with. I hope it is not to rotten to serve the purpose of trailering my boat. When done the trailer will have new bunks and painted to match the boat bottom, white.. |
Lots of rust. |
October 26, 2003, This shot is from the bow looking aft of the bunks screwed to the bottom of the boat hull to be epoxied to shape. The frame is intended to set on the trailer rails and keep the shape of the bunks. I removed the screws from the hull and the bunks stayed in shape, more or less. The bunks are treated and doubled 1 x 6's to conform to the hull twist and shape. The treatment is to keep the rot to a minimum. While the boat is setting on the bunks, some shimming may be necessary. When the bunk jug is on the trailer I will be able to just tack weld the frames in place, remove the jug and complete the welding. Then I will clean the steel and paint the trailer white to match the boat. |
Below is a shot looking forward from the stern. |
Above is a shot of the bunks bound by the plywood framework. |
