Tai Tonga 41 Outrigging Canoe Club is located in Evans Bay, Wellington.
The club was founded in 1996 by
a group of dedicated paddlers who have a passion for outrigger canoe
paddling, and the sport's accompanying image and lifestyle.
The name "Tai Tonga 41" roughly translates to 41o S Latitude - the
latitude that Wellington sits on.
The club currently has about 50 members. The core of these paddlers
consists of highly motivated and dedicated working professionals
with full-time family and career responsibilities. Members work
out a minimum of four hours a week in addition to the races. All
are committed to the pursuit of paddling excellence. These men,
women, and children compete in various divisions according to age
and ability. The men and women's team race the same distances and
boats, too. Ages range from young teenagers to some members being
in their 50s. Our average age is well into the mid-30s. We have
novice club members as well as some members who have paddled for
a decade or more!
Tai Tonga 41 OCC currently has four OC6 6-person waka ama (outrigger canoes):
a Moana Nui 1990 ("Rehua"); a Hawaiian Classic ("Atu Tahi");
and a Seahawk Tahitian ("Tutara Kauika"). Many club members also have their
own OC1 single-person waka ama.
The club is associated with WaterSports Evans Bay, formerly the Evans
Bay Motor Boat and Yacht Club. This association allows the club use
of all WaterSports Evans Bay's facilities, including rescue boats.
Tai Tonga 41 OCC has also has developed an involvement with the students of
both Rongotai College and Wellington Girls College.
