Season 1 Episode Reviews

PILOT
Ally's childhood sweetheart, Billy, works at her new law firm, and Billy is not only married, but his wife, Georgia, is gorgeous and a lawyer too! Then Ally loses her first case, an "easy win." Can it get worse? Maybe she should follow senior partner Richard Fish's advise, "Make enough money; everything else will follow."

1. COMPROMISING POSITIONS
Richard invites Ally to join him for dinner with a very wealthy potential client (guest star Tate Donovan as Ronald Cheanie). Unbeknownst to her, the evening is set up as a double date with Richard and his girlfriend (guest star Dyan Cannon as judge Whipper Cone). Ally soon believes she's being used as bait to land this client but actually ends up falling for this handsome, intelligent and humorous guy. Meanwhile, Richard's partner, John Cage, is arraigned on solicitation charges. Billy handles the case and, in so doing, ends up revealing one of his own compromising secrets.

2. THE KISS
Ally senses that Ronald is holding back when they go on their first "official" date. Georgia & Ally work together on an age discrimination case involving the firing of an attractive older female news journalist (guest star Kate Jackson).

3. THE AFFAIR
Ally is asked to be pallbearer at the funeral of her ex-law professor, but in the process must confront his widow (guest star Kathy Baker) about how well she knew him. Meanwhile, Georgia and Ronald feel threatened when Billy agrees to attend the funeral with Ally.

4. ONE HUNDRED TEARS AWAY
In a fight over who should get the last package of chips in a supermarket, Ally is provoked into an action which gets her arrested for assault and shoplifting… but that's another story. Word of the event spreads quickly and Ally's brought before the State Bar Review.

5. THE PROMISE
When an overweight attorney passes out from near heartattack, Ally is forced into CPR action to save his life. When the man awakens, he thinks he's been kissed by an angel and falls for her.

6. THE ATTITUDE
Ally represents a Jewish woman (guest star Brenda Vaccaro) who needs her rabbi to grant her a spiritual release — divorce- from her marriage. In so doing, Ally makes such an impression on the rabbi that she receives an unexpected offer. Meanwhile, Georgia is suddenly forced out of her law firm but lands on her feet when Richard asks her to join their firm.

7. DRAWING THE LINES
Billy reveals to Ally that he's not completely over her, causing the one-time lovers to talk about altering their boundaries; Ally and Georgia try to get around a pre-nuptial agreement for a woman whose wealthy husband is seeking to divorce her for another woman; and Elaine starts the process for a sexual harassment case against the law firm by hiring Caroline Poop (guest star Sandra Bernhard), who tries to win by intimidation.

8. THE DIRTY JOKE
When Ally is accused of being a Julie Andrews-type, she tries to shed the label by betting that she can tell a dirty joke — in front of her friends, colleagues and strangers — better than Renee. Meanwhile, attorney Caroline Poop (guest star Sandra Bernhard) returns to represent a beautiful office mail-deliverer, the subject of Elaine's recently withdrawn sexual harassment suit against the Cage & Fish, who now wants to file her own charges of sexual harassment against the law firm.

9. BOY TO THE WORLD
Judge Whipper Cone asks Ally to represent a beautiful and fragile transvestite prostitute (guest star Wilson Cruz). Ally is so moved by his personality and situation that she goes out of her way to keep him off the streets. Meanwhile, Richard deals with the death of his eccentric uncle and hires a gospel singer (guest star Jennifer Holiday) to belt out a popular, but politically incorrect song after the eulogy.

10.SILVER BELLS
Ally's incurable romanticism and John's legal acumen make them the perfect fit in Richard's eyes to handle the case of three adults seeking a legal marriage. Georgia, feeling blue for the holidays, points out that the clients' triangle isn't very different from the one in which Ally, Georgia and Billy find themselves. Meanwhile, preparations are in full swing for the company Christmas party in which Renee joins singer Vonda Shepard in a sexy rendition of "Santa Clause is Coming To Town."

11. CRO-MAGNON
Ally, Renee and Georgia enjoy sculpting nude males in this art class. Soon after, Ally finds herself actually going out with the man (guest star Michael Easton) whose body she was molding. 12. THE BLAME GAME
When Ally has a chance encounter with Glenn (guest star Michael Easton), they confront just how they feel towards each other. Meanwhile, John and Ally take on a wrongful death case that Richard is convinced will reap huge profits for the firm.

13. BODY LANGUAGE

14. ONCE IN A LIFETIME
Although All and Cage have talked about going out on a "real date," a nervous Ally tries to get Cage to break it off so that she doesn't have to. Ally's strange behavior makes Cage suspicious that she hasn't fully gotten over Billy.

15. FORBIDDEN FRUITS
The firm takes on a high-profile case of a jilted spouse who is suing a United States Senator for "interfering with the otherwise happy marital relations." The case takes on perversely similar parallels to the love triangle of Ally, Billy and Georgia. Also, the "Dancing Baby" pays another visit.

16. THEME OF LIFE
Ally, who is having troubles with her psyche, reluctantly agrees to meet with John's "smile therapist" (guest star Tracey Ullman). Meanwhile, Fish again pursues "Janet Reno," which only causes more trouble for him and Whipper (guest star Dyan Cannon).

17. THE PLAYING FIELD
Ally and her newest beau (guest star Jesse L. Martin) are involved in a minor traffic accident, then forced to deal with a 10-year-old lawyer — a child prodigy who can quote every Supreme Court ruling going back the last ten years. Also, Ally has more sessions with John's "smile therapist" (guest star Tracey Ullman). Meanwhile, Fish handles a bizarre sexual harassment case.

18. HAPPY BIRTHDAY BABY
While Ally's in denial about her pending birthday, her friends/co-workers are busy planning a big surprise. Meanwhile, Ally finds herself defending a client on the basis that his foot fetish qualifies him as temporarily insane.

19. THE INMATES
Billy welcomes the chance to "play on another level" when Cage/Fish & Associates defend a woman in a high-stakes murder case. Meanwhile, Ally becomes Renee's defense attorney after she's arrested on an assault and battery charge.

Meanwhile, Cage goes head-to-head against an ex-law school classmate (guest star Cynthia Stevensen), a woman he has always had special feelings for.

22. THESE ARE THE DAYS
Ally finds herself teaming again with Bobby Donnell (guest star Dylan McDemott). Also, Renee and Cage square off in an unusually romantic legal case, which leads to an unexpected revelation from one of these lawyers.
