A WORM AND A BOOK by Christine Leclair

A WORM WAS EATING A BOOK.
HE DID NOT KNOW THAT HE SHOULD NOT EAT A BOOK.
NO ONE HAD EVER READ TO HIM OR EVEN SHOWED HIM HOW TO READ, UNTIL THAT NIGHT.

A WISE OLD OWL SITTING ON A BRANCH UP HIGH IN A TREE SAW THE WORM AND SWOOPED DOWN TO EAT HIM. THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN, THE WISE OLD OWL CAME TO A HALT ONCE HE SAW THAT THE WORM WAS EATING A BOOK.

THE WISE OLD OWL YELLED OUT TO THE WORM!
"STOP THAT, WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO EAT A BOOK?"
"I AM HUNGRY OF COURSE." THE WORM ANSWERED.
"THIS THING I AM EATING IS A BOOK AND IF IT IS NOT FOR EATING, WHAT IS IT FOR?"
tHE WISE OLD OWL REPLIED. "IT IS FOR READING."
"WHAT IS READING?" THE WORM ASKED THE WISE OLD OWL.

THE WISE OLD OWL JUMPED UP ONTO A BROKEN OLD CHAIR AND BEGAN TO ANSWER. "READ IS WHAT IS DONE TO A WORD, AND WHEN MORE THAN ONE WORD IS READ IT IS CALLED READING.  READING IS HOW A BOOK CAN TALK WITHOUT SPEAKING."
"SIR, WOULD YOU PLEASE TEACH ME HOW TO READ THIS BOOK?"
THE WORM ASKED THE WISE OLD OWL.

THE WISE OLD OWL OPENED THE BOOK AND BEGAN TO READ THE BOOK ALOUD.
WORM STARTED TO SMILE. THE SMILE NEVER LEFT HIS FACE.
ONCE THE BOOK CAME TO THE END THE WORM SAID "THANK YOU" TO THE WISE OLD OWL, AND HE REPLIED WITH "YOU'RE WELCOME."
HE OPENED ANOTHER BOOK AND BEGAN TO TEACH THE WORM TO READ.

THE ONLY BOOK THE WORM EVER ATE AFTER THAT NIGHT WAS AN OLD COOK BOOK SOMEONE THREW OUT.

THE END
