Bill & Julia's Water Garden

The most often asked question we get is how much did it COST to build our pond. Here is were I try and answer all your pond questions, and tell you what we used in building ours, what the cost was and how we maintain it. I will try and keep it simple for all our sakes.

Pond Materials and Supplies.
1. The liner: We used a 45 Mil, U.V. Stabilized Flexible EPDM Rubber liner that was 15'x20' the cost was $200.
2. Pump: Little Giant 1/2HP with a 1200 GPH discharge. $65.
3. Bio Filter: Not sure (tore the decal off)but it was only $45.
4. Rock: We bought a quarter ton of sandstone for $135, there is lots of sandstone in Oklahoma so it's pretty cheap here.
5. Flex-hose: 1.5"x20' cost $12.
6. Misc...plumbing parts: $5.

Grand Total comes to $462. Not to bad for a pond that is 12'x8'in size. I won't say how much it cost in back breaking labor on my behalf, let's just say that cost was priceless (that's what I keep telling my better half).

Maintenance.
Very little. We have the good fortune of living in the country on five acre's of land which has it's own water well. There are no chemicals in our water so there is no need to treat the pond water with chemicals.

Once a year in the Spring we empty all but 8" of the water and clean out all the leaves, acorns, snails and dead stuff that has gathered on the bottom.
Yes I do climb inside the pond to clean it, I leave our fish in also (too hard to catch) I also wear a pair of garden gloves, you never know what's laying on the bottom.
Note: if your pump is inside your pond like ours, simply take the flex hose and use it to empty the pond.

This is a good time to check and clean the bio-filter. All I do is rinse out the filter and make sure that there is nothing that may clog the intake and out takes. Don't keep the filter out of the water for too long, you can kill all the microbes that you have spent so long breeding inside it.
I have heard from others (Pond Gods) that you should clean your filter a couple times a year. I have yet seen the need to do this. Maybe it's that good well water we have, I don't know.

Well that's about all there is to it. From start to finish, it takes me about a hour to clean out the pond.

Fish.
We have only three fish at this time, two are Fantail Goldfish, we had three goldfish but I think the raccoons got one.
The other is a Perch that my sons friend caught and asked to put it in our pond, It's been in there for over a year and still kicking.

We don't do anything when it comes to the fish, Since the first day we put them in the pond they have been on their own. I don't even feed them, they seem to eat all the bugs and things that are in the pond. Now this may change when we decide to invest in some Koi, but for now it works for me.

Pump & Filter Setup.
There are many ways to setup the pump and filter system, (Pond Gods again) This is how I setup ours.
Both the pump and filter are inside the pond. Water enters the Bio-filter first from the top of the filter and then is pulled out the bottom by the pump, the pump then sends the water out to the flex-hose which runs to the waterfall. There is about a 2' space between the pump and filter. Very simple, very easy, I am sure that (Pond Gods) have much better ways to handle this part, but hey it works for me.

Well that's about all there is to say for now. If you have questions, please feel free to e-mail us and if I don't know the answers, I will sure try to find out.
