Meet Your Teacher
About myself...
My name is Tamara Barker.  I was born in Sandusky, OH and basically lived there until I started teaching in Marion.  And yes...I worked at Cedar Point for almost 10 summers!  I received my bachelors degree in music education from Heidelberg College in 1992 and my master's degree in technology in the classroom from Walden University in 2008.

Before teaching in Marion, I taught in the Sandusky City School and for various Catholic schools in Toledo, Maumee, Clyde and Bellevue.  I started teaching in Marion in 1998.  At first I taught elementary general music at Olney Elementary and was assistant high school orchestra director.  Two years later, I was still at Olney, but became assistant choir director at the high school. Two years after that, I did solely elementary music in various schools in Marion.  This year I am teaching at Benjamin Harrison all day. I tell people I have my dream job right now. I love what I do and I love the kids.

Along with singing, I also play piano, violin, clarinet, recorder, bassoon, and have tinkered with the banjo, french horn and guitar and balalaika.  I used to teach private lessons in piano, voice and violin before my daughter was born.  I also am a certified piano tuner and technician.

I have a husband, Scott, who works as a maintenance electrician iin Findlay.  I also have a daughter, Samantha, who is 5 years old.  She attends Harrison with me and is in kindergarten.  We have a breed of cat called Sphynx.  Her name is Jessie.  She has NO HAIR!.  We live a little north of Upper Sandusky way out in the country.
My mission is to instill a lifelong love for learning and enjoying music.  Every day I will encourage and expect my students to try new things and expand their skills.  By teaching with enthusiasm, I will bring out the excitement music can bring to a persons life.  This will communicate to my students that music is something that will enrich their lives and their souls.  I want my students to not only learn music, but most of all experience music.
