Phanom Rung
Phanom Rung Historical Park contains the best restored Khmer ruins in Thailand, though the area is seldom visited by international tourists.  This is probably because the ancient temple is not the most conveniently located (it is near neither Bangkok nor the beach) and as a result it can be quite a peaceful sight-seeing trip.   This monument is incredible, even if inaccessible.
Phanom Rung is rare among Khmer temples in its orientation.  Built during the apex of Angkor rule, it faces the south-east to Angkor Wat.
Here I am at Phanom Rung.  The temple is atop an extinct volcano, providing a fabulous view of the Khorat plateau and the Dongrek mountains of Cambodia.
This is the main sanctuary.  The detail is amazing.  Carved reliefs and sculptures cover the building.
The Pra Narai Lintel located on the main sanctuary is of particular historical interest.  It disapeared from the temple during the 1960's, and was later discovered on display at the Art Institute of Chicago.  It has finally been returned to its rightful home after years of heavy protests.
Worshippers must cross over a series of Naga  bridges before reaching the main sanctuary.  The Naga is a serpent-like creature with magical powers.
You may have noticed by now that I've developed a certain obsession with ruins.  I can't get enough of them!  Fortunately, there are plenty to see here in Thailand- from lots of different historical periods and featuring lots of different styles.
