HERMITS
(These cookies remind me of Grandma, she used to bake these on the holidays)
INGREDIENTS:
3 1/2 CUPS SIFTED FLOUR
1/4 TEASPOON BAKING SODA
3 TEASPOONS BAKING POWDER
1/2 TEASPOON SALT
1 TEASPOON CINNAMON
1/2 TEASPOON NUTMEG
1/2 TEASPOON GROUND CLOVE
1/2 CUP SHORTENING
1 1/2 CUPS CUPS BROWN SUGAR, FIRMLY PACKED
2 EGGS, WELL BEATEN
2 TABLESPOONS MILK
1 CUP SEEDLESS RAISINS, CUT IN PIECES
1 CUP CHOPPED WALNUT MEATS
THE PROCESS:
SIFT TOGETHER FLOUR, SODA, BAKING POWDER, SALT AND SPICES. CREAM SHORTENING, ADD SUGAR SLOWLY, AND BEAT UNTIL FLUFFY. STIR IN EGGS. ADD SIFTED DRY INGREDIENTS ALTENATELY WITH MILK. STIR IN RAISINS AND 3/4 CUP WALNUTS. ROLL 1/8 INCH THICK ON LIGHTLY FLOURED BOARD. CUT INTO DESIRED SHAPES. BAKE ON GREASED COOKIE SHEET IN A HOT OVEN (400° F) ABOUT 12 MINUTES. COOL AND TOP WITH CONFECTIONERS' SUGAR FROSTING (MOST OF THE TIME THE RECIPE IS ON THE BOX OF CONFECTION SUGAR). SPRINKLE WITH REMAINING NUTS. MAKES ABOUT 9 DOZEN 2-INCH COOKIES.
