Tamsyn Lewis' main goal in her career is to break the Australian 800m record, which has stood for 23 years at 1:59.0 minutes, and every time she runs the event, she inches a little closer.

In January 2000, she competed in a Grand Prix, when she recorded a time of 1:59.21 minutes.

"I want to break that record, it's been there for a bit too long and I'm in good shape," she says.

Lewis actually trains with another one of Australia's top athletes ? the amazing Cathy Freeman.

"Just having her in the training squad is great. She's such a motivated person and it rubs off when you're around positive people and she's a sensational person to be around," Lewis says. "I love training with her, she brings out the best in everybody in our group."

In 1994, Lewis first made herself known as a 400m runner, and it wasn't until 1998 that she decided to make the move to 800m.

In the 1998 Commonwealth Games, she finished sixth in the final of the 800m.

Early 1999, she set a new personal best of 2:00.95 minutes. At the same time, she made the semi finals of the 800m at the World Indoor Championships, and ran the fastest split in the silver medal winning 4x400m relay team.

During early 2000, she set a personal best for 400m (51.51 seconds) and a near recent personal best over 800m (2:00.52 minutes).

Although Lewis is creeping closer to smashing the Australian record, she is still around six seconds outside the world record of 1:53.87 minutes.

However, Lewis is still only 22 years of age and has a lot of mileage left in her legs and time to improve.
