This Web Site

We are independant cycle tourists and spend four to five months a year touring. We would like to share our experience with other cyclists and encoarage people of all ages to get on their bikes and go travelling. Here we will give descriptions of our tours and we hope provide a means for others to plan their own tours. We will also provide links to the web sites of other cycling tourists and develop a net work for the benefit of us all. Please contact us if you have a web site describing cycle tours. Tell us about it.

TOURING ON A
TANDEM

The Tandem

On her first tour down the Pacific Coast from Oregon to southern California an onlooker in a camp site exclaimed, "Wow, she's the Cadillac of bicycles!" And she is. Custom made by Mr Keith Lippy, then based in Bend, Oregon, her various tubes were lovingly brazed together by a master craftsman. Her whole body is wonderfully sculptured and her paint work is two toned, deep blue and turquoise, matching the giant panniers she carries. seven years and 50,000 touring km later she is still a beauty. She has been seen in seven countries on five continents and looks forward to touring in many new places.

The Captain and the Stoker

Burley Shepard was born in Kansas City Missouri in 1932 so he is getting on in years. Between cycle tours he keeps fit by running three or four times a week. He moved to Europe when he retired in 1988 and, looking for a good place to live, stumbled upon the Algarve in Southern Portugal. He bought a tiny house in one of the oldest streets in the town of Loulé. Rua de Mouraria, or road of the Moors, dates back to 1249 when Loulé was reconquered and the Portuguese needed to retain some Moors to teach them how to keep and maintain the wonderful irrigations systems which kept the gardens and orchards round the town productive. This little street just outside the city walls became their home.

In December 1992 Irene came to visit friends in Loulé. She and Burley met and it was love at first sight: well, almost! They married and a year later the Tandem entered their lives and made cycle touring much more attractive. Irene is a Swiss who was born and brought up in Zimbabwe. She left in 1986 and had a six year stint teaching in the American International School of Zurich. This prepared her for life with an American man and an American Tandem.
