Mikey was born on December 8 1961 in Newcastle, and he attended school in his birthtown. In the 1980s, he was a member of the famous Newcastle comedy troupe, the Castanet Club, and they released several albums and videos. Other members of the group included Steven Aboott (aka The Sandman), Glenn Butcher (Full Frontal, Rocky Horror) and Angela Moore (Abbott's wife). One of their clips was shown on Rage when Paul and Mikey guest programmed in 1998.

Throughout his career he has worked on many projects. He has hosted Triple J's breakfast show, with Helen Razer, Paul McDermott, Jen Aldershaw and the Sandman on a seven year reign. He has done a lot of TV work, including Elle McFeast's show, Good News Week and the short lived "The Comedy Sale", a sketch comedy show that screened three times out of the thirteen that were commissioned on Channel Seven (spookily, at 7.30pm Sundays, against 60 minutes!). He has been involved in many books, including the Good News Week books, a book with Helen Razer called "Three Beers and a Chinese Meal", a book of poetry and short articles and he also wrote a chapter for "Novacastrian Tales" a book for the bicentenary of Newcastle. In 1997, he co-wrote a book with Steve Abbott and Tony Squires called "Big Man's World".

In 1999, as well as following with the rest of the GNW crew to Channel Ten, he married his long time girlfriend, Laura. 2000 saw Mikey starring in the first of his "Pubs & Beernuts" specials on Channel Ten, which was about famous people and their favourite drinking holes.

Some other interesting facts about Mikey are that he can be seen in a crowd shot on the "Best Bits of The Late Show: Volume 3" (ABC Video), he played a guest role in the film "Black Rock" (he was playing the pokies in a really loud Hawaiian shirt).
