The Horsehead in Orion is a very interesting but extremely difficult object to observe. The horsehead is a thick black cloud of dust and gas that can be seen only because it blocks out some light that's coming from the faint diffuse nebula IC 434. The horsehead is estimated to be 1 light year across and is composed of a thin haze of dust in non - luminous gas. You need a very dark and clear sky to actually try to observe this object which is probably the most challenging you will ever encounter. To locate it scan the area about halfway between Alnitak and the 11th and 12th magnitude stars that are directly south of it. A H-beta filter that screws into your eyepeice might help you observe the nebula. |
