NGC 5236, M83

M83 lies on the border of Hydra and Centaurus and is probably like our own galaxy seen from above one of the poles 20 million light years away. It consists of billions of stars and gigantic clouds of gas and dust. This is one of the finest examples of a spiral galaxy having old yellow stars torwards the centre and young blue stars around the edges also with hot red star forming regions. The hot blue stars explode as supernovae from time to time and at least 8 have been seen over the past 70 years.
