Kahrin

Waler Arab mare I bought Kahrin in November of 1994 when she was still relatively unbroken.  I thought I could break her in myself, which may have been a stupid move... Originally, at the time of purchase, it was intended that she be used as a stock horse, as I had cows in those days.  But that didn't eventuate...

As it turned out, she was excellent at herding, be it goat, other horses etc, and she didn't like cows very much at all. Well, calves anyway - she just wanted to terrorise them. I went to a weekend crash course in training horses, and I came out with a little bit more knowledge.  As a result, Kahrin had the softest mouth, and was a really good ride, only once she had been left to her own devices for too long (hadn't been ridden in quite a while) she became quite an opinionated horse that preferred to be the boss.  But she didn't have me bluffed.  I gave as good I got, and up until the day she died, we were still on an equal playing field.

Kahrin was the horse that I aimed to use for a breeding program into helping reestablish the world renowned type of Waler.  These horses proved to have great stamina and endurance during many wars around the turn of the 20th Century, as Kahrin proved so spectacularly, by putting on weight, even when there appears to be absolutely nothing to eat in her paddock (as was most often the case during summer). Her father was outback bred, and her mother was an arab, so she had the foundation type.  Word has it that she looks like her father.. I have yet to find that out for myself, but I will be trying. Now that she is no longer with me (died in October 2002), I am thinking that Amber, although bred to different lines, may one day continue my Waler breeding plans... but we shall see......
