Maurits Cornelis Escher was an dutch man who practised graphic arts. He has made a lot woodcuts, lithographs, woodengravements, drawings and sketches. Almost everybody knows him or his works. but who was M.C. Escher?
Maurits Cornelis Escher was born in June 1898 in Leeuwarden (The Netherlands). He was the fourth and youngest child in his familie. Like more great artists, Escher was Left handed. When he was five he and his familie moved to Arnhem, also in the Netherlands.
Escher spend most of his youth in Arnhem. There he also went to highschool, but he failed his exams. After that he went to the school for Architecture and Decorative arts in Haarlem. After only one week Escher found out he'd rather study graphic arts than Architecture and Decorative arts. His Graphic teacher has seen his drawings and encouraged him to go on with it.
After finishing Graphics Arts, he went to italy and travelled there and met his wife Jetta Umiker, wich he married in 1924. they settled in Rome and stayed there for eleven years, in wich he travelled everyyear troughout italy. while travelling he got inspiration for the drawings and sketches he made when he got home.
