Just two years ago when Shawn Roberts played the wolf in a school production of Little Red Riding Hood, a friend’s dad, Robert Forsythe (Gemini-winning scnptwriter br North of 60), was so taken with his performance that he helped the novice actor get an audition for Emily of New Moon.
He’s been a regular ever since, playing the role of Teddy and loving every minute of it.
Roberts, who’s repped by The Characters in Toronto, has also starred in Goosebumps, a series based on the books by R.L Stine which he had read as a young boy. He says it was Goosebumps director Ron Oliver who showed him the ropes and helped him to gain his confidence in front of the camera. “He had a big impact on my acting.”
Roberts has also starred in Sea People and played Daniel in Jacob Two-Two & The Hooded Fang.
It is a busy life for the Stratford, Ont.-based 15 year-old, who travels to Toronto four or five times a month to work.
Roberts says one of the best things about the business is the people in it. “They support you, they understand how you feel, and can comfort you better than anyone else who knows you.”
But being a 15-old-year star can he tough, especially when auditioning for parts older than your years. “Sometimes I feel like I don’t have enough life experience to know how that person would feel at any one minute.”
Roberts and Luc Forsythe (Rob Forsythe’s son) are busy at work on a screenplay called Fake i.d. about a bunch of teenagers and their adventures. “It is about funny everyday things that make you laugh.” As for the future, Roberts plans to study film and television after high school while continuing to work in the industry.
But along with dreams of “big blockbusters” and action hero roles, more immediate plans are to get his licence, and a truck to go with it.
