Heidelberg is one of our favorite cities in Germany. In addition to it's huge castle, there is a nice walk platz where you can do some shopping or eating. Everyone goes out there on a nice day and it's just fun to walk around and look at things. There is also the Alte Brucke (Old Bridge) where common criminals and debtors were held in a prison in the bridges towers. This is the 9th bridge (built in 1786) to be built as the other 8 were destroyed by ice floes and floods. The oldest part of the castle was built in the 15th century and the newer parts were built in the 16th and 17th centuries. The castle holds one of the largest wine barrels in Europe - made from 130 oak trees, it's capable of holding 58,500 gallons of wine! |
