Signing #1: Sunday, July 9, 2000Hanging Around To See What Would HappenAfter the first show, we found out we couldn't get into the second show because it was full, so we decided to hang out near backstage. I was hoping I could meet everybody, but I really wanted to meet Steve, get his autograph, and generally worship him from a-near (instead of from afar). But that didn't happen. I also had this idea that maybe I could get Bermuda to sign my drum tattoo.... Would it happen? Hmmmmm.... While I was waiting to see if maybe Steve would come out, Al, the cheerleaders, Rubén, Danny, and some others came out, got into a golf cart looking vehicle surrounded by security guards and went off to ride a roller coaster or two. I was about 5 feet from Al when he got into the cart. He looked right at me and I waved. He waved back. That was cool. I also waved at Danny who also waved back. I don't know for sure, but I think Danny recognized me from the concert. He was smiling his head off. I just love that guy! I had seen Steve come out of the backstage area a couple of times but I didn't catch his eye. I yelled his name once and felt like a real jerk, so I decided to just wait and see what would happen. What happened was that Bermuda came out and just walked up to the fence where I was standing. I held out my hand and said "Hi Bermuda, I'm Tara Lyn." Jon shook my hand and said that he saw me sitting next to Sue in the front row. I thought that was so cool! OK, now came the hard part, keeping the conversation going. Not my forte', you understand! So, onward I stumbled, hoping I didn't sound like too much of a dork! So, I said, "No roller coasters for you today?" He said no, he'd been on them all before. Then we somehow got talking about how he went on the biggest Ferris Wheel in the world when he was in England. I asked if that was the one built especially for the Millennium Celebration. He said yes. I want you to know he made me feel really at ease! About this time Sue and Amy came over and we all started talking with Bermuda. I was glad to have someone step in the conversation, because I was running out of things to say and FAST! So, while other people were talking, I was psyching myself up to ask Bermuda to sign my drum tattoo! When I finally got up enough nerve to ask, I must have made some grand gesture, because Bermuda stopped talking, and looked at me in an expectant manner. Luckily, I didn't cave! I told him that I had gotten a tattoo in the shape of a drum and I wondered if he would sign it for me. First he said yes, then when I started to take off the shirt I had wrapped around my waist, he asked, "Where is it?" I laughed when I realized that I hadn't told him where it was and that he probably thought I was going to take my shorts off or something! I said that it was just on my back, so I turned around and pulled up the back of my shirt. Top
I asked Amy to let me borrow her pen and she handed it to Bermuda. Unfortunately, it didn't write! Bermuda said it was because I was 'moist!' (A very polite way to put it, I might add. He's such a gentleman!) I laughed at that because I was really sweaty from dancing my head off at the concert. So, Amy brought out another pen that sort of worked. And Bermuda signed my back! I was giggling the whole time yet trying not to move at the same time. Not easy! While he was signing, I said that I didn't play the drums but that my mommy always said that I walked to the beat of my own drum!
I think he said something about nobody being able to see the tattoo under normal circumstances and I replied that there was no one special to see it right now, but I hoped there would be one soon! I'm still not sure if what I said had anything to do with what he said. I don't know why I said that and now really wish I hadn't. Oh well!
(When Dave Rossi saw the photo above for the first time, he said that at first, since you couldn't see the pen Bermuda was using, he didn't really know what was going on in the picture. That made me really laugh because, of course, he's right!)
I wanted photographic evidence of the autograph! So, I asked Amy to take a picture. I turned my back toward the camera and Bermuda leaned into the picture before Amy took it. Amy took a real tight shot of the tattoo and the autograph, so I’m not sure if Bermuda will actually appear in this one.
After the pictures were taken, I thanked Bermuda profusely then ran to the bathroom, giggling my head off, so I could look at the autograph in a mirror. Luckily, there is photographic evidence, because when I got to the bathroom, the sig had already smeared a little! When I got to the hotel that night, it was nothing but a light gray smudge! Maybe the actual event was fleeting, but it will be one of my fondest memories of the whole weekend that will last for years to come!
Bermuda was very casual and unfazed about the whole thing, like such things happen everyday! I guess getting your portrait and signature tattooed on Dave Rossi's leg sort of primes you for such events. THANKS Bermuda for being such a good sport!
