Mickey Mouse
Mickey Mouse is the most famous of the Disney cartoon characters. Making his debut in "Steamboat Willie" at the Colony Theatre in New York City on November 18, 1928. Mickey would star in over 120 different cartoons. In the 1950's Mickey got his own television show: "The Mickey Mouse Club". He was the first of the Disney-characters to star in a full length animated feature, Fantasia.
But how did it all happen? Why did Mickey Mouse became so popular and why is he still? Let's go back to the 1920's. Walt and his brother, Roy, finally got a little success with their studio. But then their distributor claimed there most famous character at that time, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. Walt went to New York to negotiate for a new contract, but in the end he lossed everything. On the trip back to Los Angelese, he created Mickey Mouse. First he wanted to name him Mortimer Mouse, but his wife Lilian liked Mickey Mouse. And so a star was born. It took all of the studio's money to produce the first three cartoons with Mickey Mouse. It was their last change to get back on their feet. Walt knew that they should make Mickey special, so audiences would come and see him. And they decided to combine sound with animation, something that never happened before. By that Mickey Mouse became famous and soon his star would outshine the likes of Oswald, Felix and Betty Boop.
A few years later Mickey got colors and even got a part in a movie. Then television followed and he got his own program, "The Mickey Mouse Club", with a tune that children everywhere sang across the street. Mickey Mouse merchandise was very popular. Through the century Mickey Mouse became a symbol for innosence, safety and happiness. Together with his pals, we can visit him in themeparks, where we can touch him and hug him. We can see him on television, read about him in magazines and follow him on the internet. On occasions, we can find him back in the cinema, where his fame started.
One thing we can say for sure: Mickey Mouse is probably one of the worlds most famous persons. From the USA to Russia, from Iceland to South Africa and from the Pacific Island to the isolated places in China, everybody have heard of him.
