Glendene, tucked away between Kelston and Te Atatu South, loses on of it's most popular residents this week when Mr George Meyrick leaves for Hasting. Mr Meyrick lived in Glendene for seven year's with his wife and two son's. During that time he has organised many functions and served on a number of committee's. He arrived in New Zealand 10 years ago from Britain, where he was a policeman. He served with New Zealand police at Kawerau as well as being the local scoutmaster and a member of a school committee. When he and his family moved to Glendene. Mr Meyrick decided that the suburb needed bonding into a community. He helped to start the Glendene Indoor Bowling Club, ran a game of housie over a three-year period to raise funds for the school and was eventually elected chairman of the Glendene Home and School Association. Mr Meyrick was also prominent in other fundraising campaigns and an active member of Boystown. A school committe describes him as a man with a hatful of practical ideas, tactful and able to organise any function successfully. Just before his departure the committee present him with a briefcase and his wife with a bouquet of flowers. Mr Meyrick has been promoted to sales manager at Hastings with the General Accessory Company. |
