PINK RED ORANGE
GREY BLACK PURPLE
PINK WHITE BROWN
The Stroop Effect
The Stroop Effect is named after J. Ridley Stroop who discovered this amazing phenomenon in the 1930's. The Stroop paper is one of the most cited reference articles in the history of experimental psychology. Your assignment is to name the colors of the following words. Do NOT read the words! Say the COLOR of the words as fast as you can. For instance, if the word RED is printed in a BLUE color, you should say BLUE. You might think this is simple but it is more difficult than you might imagine!
The Stroop Effect-Say the COLOR and NOT the word
BLUE GREEN YELLOW
PINK RED ORANGE
GREY BLACK PURPLE
TAN WHITE BROWN
Stroop Effect Explanation
Why is it difficult? The Stroop Effect is a demonstration of interference of reaction time while performing a task. Your experience has probably taught you that the word is more important than the color. The color produces interference when trying to say the word because your brain is trying to decipher two pieces of information at the same time. The Stroop Effect suggests that we are not as fully in control of our attention span as we might believe.
