VITO CARTA

• Vito Carta non è un moralista, e il suo percorso artistico richiama al grottesco degli anni ‘20, come se Otto Dix si fosse messo a fotografare acquerelli dilaniati. Ma Carta è un uomo dell’oggi, la pittura è nei suoi ricordi, l’arte è nel gesto che il pennello elettronico gli fa fare ogni volta che un soggetto lo attrae - per perturbarlo. 
  Vito Carta non è un moralista, non è un fustigatore dei costumi, ma nemmeno è un fotografo che si prefigge di dare al pubblico uno sguardo sul mondo. Semmai, la sua fotografia è introspettiva, il suo sguardo vaga su se stesso, su ciò che lo anima, siano essi fantasmi del passato, del presente e anche del futuro, sia che si tratti di una critica a ciò che particolarmente lo disturba, e disturbandolo lo attrae. L’artista prova un grande piacere nel deturpare le proprie immagini per farne qualcosa che dovrà esistere principalmente per l’osservatore; troppo facile, infatti, lasciare i propri incubi notturni e diurni a dilavarsi nel “non pensarci più” delle occupazioni quotidiane. La fotografia di Carta “sviluppa” certi incubi rianimandoli, non facendoli scappare; e inoltre fissa forme di rabbia e di disincanto, cartoline dall’inferno e, talvolta, in una moderazione che spesso gli fa bene, dal purgatorio. Carta è capace anche d’altro, e il suo fare arte si sta ammorbidendo verso quella che mi pare una testimonianza di maturità: pian piano abbandona gli incubi per lasciarsi andare, nelle sue ultime opere, a riflessioni, un modo di immortalare - causticamente - vanità e seduzione, patinati diktat contemporanei. A word from the critic
Ladies perfume bottles barely recognisable by their shadows, and in the background, only in the background, a shadowlike woman who appears to be groping for one of the cosmetics bottles: vanity, seduction is written on two of the labels. Not brands, but very often grotesque imperatives of modern living. 
Vito Carta is not a moralist and his artistic career harks back to the grotesque of the nineteen-twenties, as if Otto Dix had photographed watercolors torn to shreds. But Carta is a man of today, painting for him is a recollection, art is in the gesture that the electronic paintbrush has him make every time a subject draws him - to perturb him. 
Vito Carta is not a moralist, he is not a scourge of customs, but neither is he a photographer who sets himself the task of giving his public a view on the world. Rather, his photography is introspective, his gaze wanders back over himself, over what animates him, be these ghosts of the past, the present and also of the future, or albeit a critique of what particularly disturbs him, and that disturbing him attracts him. 
The artist experiences great pleasure in defiling his own images to turn them into something that mainly exists for the observer; too easy in fact to leave his nightmares and those that beset him during the daytime to be washed away by the thoughtlessness of our daily actions. 
Carta’s photography “works up” certain nightmares, not allowing them to escape; as well as that he sets down forms of rage and disillusionment, postcards from hell and at times, in a moderation that does him good, from purgatory. Carta is also capable of going beyond this, and his making art is softening towards what to me appears to bear witness to maturity: he is slowly leaving the nightmares to give way, in his latest works, to reflections, a way of caustically immortalizing vanity and seduction, glossy contemporary diktats.
