Jason of Star Command was a sixteen chapter serial when it began as a segment of Tarzan and the Super 7 in 1978. Like the other new segments, each Jason chapter was 12 minutes long. Unlike previous Filmation live-action efforts, Jason was more action focused than on morals. Contributing to this were two likely factors: 1) It was only a 12-minute segment buried within a ninety-minute show, and 2) The said show was entirely action focused.

Jason was a spin-off from the previous season?s Space Academy. The stories centered around Star Command, a ?secret section of Space Academy?, which in fact was the obvious power behind the space station. The serialized stories centered around the efforts of the power-mad Dragos, self-proclaimed ?master of the cosmos?, who seemed bent on either conquering or destroying Star Command. Dragos commanded a ?Dragonship?, complete with a compliment of Drone fighter ships, and had a laser cannon for an eye patch. Sid Haig played Dragos to perfection. Craig Littler played Jason. The Commander of Star Command was James Doohan of Star Trek fame. Charlie Dell played the bumbling, good-natured Professor E.J. Parsafoot, and Susan O Hanlon portrayed Captain Nicole Davidoff. Rounding out the Star Command team was WIKI (serial numbers W.1.K.1.), a handy pocket sized robot, who could, among other things, fire a laser and cruise through space.

Jason of Star Command managed to pastiche to perfection the old science fiction serials of the 40s, such as Buck Rogers, Flash Gordon, and Undersea Kingdom. The show looked and felt a lot like one of the old serials. Loaded with action, the serial also boasted arguably some of the best special effects for its day. The show was packed with great looking space shots and battles, alien landscapes, and model animated aliens.

The serial proved to be the highest rated segment in Tarzan and the Super 7, and CBS rewarded Filmation by granting Jason his own new half hour time slot in 1979. At the time, it was the highest budgeted Saturday morning series ever produced, weighing in at around $220,000 per episode. Unfortunately, minus the Super 7, Jason only lasted for a brief, half season run before CBS took it off their Saturday morning schedule and moved it to Sunday mornings, the graveyard spot for cancelled Saturday morning shows.
