Launceston People joined the Global Protest

12 Million join global war protests over 700 cities in 60 Countries.

6000 in a Tokyo park and 25,000 across Japan.

2 million in the UK and 1,000,000 march through central London to hear speeches from US civil rights leader Jesse Jackson, playwright Harold Pinter and activist Bianca Jagger.

Protests were also held in 250 other UK cities,including 60,000 in Glasgow and Belfast.

500 in war torn Sarajevo stood a quiet vigil in icy temperatures for 30 minutes.

500,000 people in Manhattan, New York, heard speakers Archbishop Desmond Tutu and actors Susan Sarandon and Danny Glover.

There were 100,000 people in 140 other USA Communities,including
10,000 people in Chicago who took to the streets to protest.

There were 60,000 in LA.

In Canada there were 30,000 in Toronto,10s of 1000s in other Canadian Cities including Halifax,Montreal,Ottawa,Edmonton,Windsor,Alberta and Victoria.

5000 in Capetown protested.They were joined by 20,000 in Johannesburg,3,000 in Durban and 7,000 in Kabiz.

6000 Students, professors, artists and Muslims participated in a "March for Peace" through the Philippine capital Manila ending in a candlelight vigil outside the US embassy

Fiji Anti-War Movement (FAWM) sent floral messages to foreign embassies imploring them to pressure the US and its allies to avoid war.

In Hong Kong, organisations including the Beijing-backed party, the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment of Hong Kong, staged protests today outside the US consulate. A larger rally outside the US and British consulates was planned for Saturday.

Thailand's Muslim community,who make up 10% of the Thai Population of 63 million organised boycotts of American Products.

Islamic Asia marked its opposition to the war, with hundreds of Malaysian activists attempting to protest in the capital Kuala Lumpur and on the island state of Penang.
3000 Malaysian peace campaigners collected over a million signatures against the war.

In Dili,East Timor 150 protestors marched on the US and Australian Consulates.

In the Islamic republic of Pakistan, the Lahore-based Pakistan Anti-War Committee, a coalition of labour and political groups, organised protests in 20 cities.

Other protests occurred in Taipei and Singapore.

France had 300,000 and 100,000 in Paris.

In Hobart,Tasmania - Police shoved people back onto footpath and forced the march to stop for traffic lights!

The Hobart rally was mc'd by the President of the United Nations Association of Australia, and Launceston resident,Margaret Reynolds The Hobart gathering also heard Launceston activist and gardening personality Peter Cundall.Peter is a former CPA member.

In Launceston 3000 people were refused permission to march on the road but this happened anyway. Very successful demo. Lachie Campbell , Great Grandson , of Launceston's Alec Campbell gave a good anti-war speech (the late Alec Campbell was anti-war himself,and would he have pleased that his family were present.).

In Devonport 750 heard , another great grandchild of Campbell speak.

St Helens 100 (population 2000). Socialist Alliance member Barry Hicks spoke.

Strahan 50 people.
