Tim is from the Upper Penisula of Michigan.  The Upper Penisula is connected to the lower Penisula by the Mackinac (pronounced Mackinaw) Bridge.   He was born in Escanaba, Michigan and grew up on a farm near Carney, Michigan for over twenty years.   For the last few of those years, Tim attended Great Lakes Adventist Academy (grades 10-12), Southern Adventist University and Union College.

Michigan is such a beautiful state.  Even though I have not lived there for any great length of time, I have spent three summers working at Camp Au Sable in Grayling, Michigan.  I have had many opportunities to visit Michigan before and after Tim and I married. Since his family will probably live there forever, I will get plenty of opportunities to visit Michigan and the Upper Pensiula.

Michigan's Upper Penisula is full of trees, wildlife, and beautiful landscapes.  In the fall, the kaleidoscope of leaf colors in maginificent.  The many maple trees also provide the perfect opportunity for maple syruping.  In fact, Tim's family used to tap several trees.  The name for our website was actually derived from  the maple-syruping term, sugar bush.  That is where the syrup is made from the sugar that comes from the tree.  Many varieties of "northwoods" creatures call the UP home--bear, moose, deer (thousands, possibly millions) and many other galavant around the countryside.  The Upper Penisula also has many waterfalls and springs.  The Porcupine Mountains provide perfect skiing slopes in the winter and hiking/climbing opportunities in the summer.

Michigan is probably best-known for the Great Lakes.  Tim's family lives within about 20 miles one of Lake Michgan's Northwestern shores.  Many lighthouses speck the coasts of the Great Lakes.  On our honeymoon, we had the opportunity to stay inside one lighthouse on Lake Superior--The Sandhills Lighthouse Inn.  I love lighthouses, and it was amazing!  We were also able to visit the Copper Harbor lighthouse which is about twenty minutes north of Sandhills Lighthouse Inn.

Mackinac Island and Traverse City are two more popular tourist destinations that I have had the opportunity to visit.  Mackinac Island is known for its turn-of-the-century homes and lifestyle.  The popular modes of transportation are horse and bicycle.  Traverse City is approximately an hour west of Grayling, Michigan.  It is known as the cherry capital of the world because all of the cherries produced in the area, and each summer a Cherry Festival takes place.  Old Mission Penisula is home to many cherry farmers (one of them is my Dad's cousin, Llewellyn Seibold and his family) and vineyard owners.  Sleeping Bear Dunes is another attraction near Traverse City.
