Split Chains
Split Chains... This is the easiest way I know of to do split chains.
Although there are lots of other methods. Try this if you have never
done them before. Take the main shuttle, the one you are making rings
with and join it to the base of the first ring and chain in the round.
Leave a very small space of thread, you will need less then you think
you will. This thread is called the carrying thread. Turn the work around
so that the shuttle is hanging from the back of the work. Using a crochet
hook pull a loop of the shuttle thread around the carrying thread. Pass
the shuttle through the loop. Tighten up the loop, but do not tighten
all the way. Now push the top of the loop toward you. You should see the
single shuttle thread that went around the carrying thread. With your
crochet hook pull this single thread up until it is large enough to pass
the shuttle through. While you are doing all this pulling and tightening
keep a grip on the loop you had made. (The nasty little things want to
slide around the carrying thread.) Now tighten the loop up and slide it
to your left. Make as many of these as the pattern calls for. When you
are done you will have both shuttles in the middle of the chain. You will
be ready to start the next round, without making any cuts and ties.
Thank you for this tip Suzann Welker.
