Needle Tatting Split Rings

To make split rings in needle tatting you work the first half of the ring in the regular manner. Then unthread your needle and turn it around. Work the other half of your ring with the thread that went through your needle's eye. The first half is worked toward the tip of the needle. The second half toward the eye of the needle. When you reach the end, re-thread your needle and close the ring as usual.

Split rings in needle tatting are easy, but a pain because you have to rethread the needle all the time.

Thread the needle like you were going to make ring and chain. Make a ring 3ds-3ds-3ds-3ds close and make a knot. Do not reverse work.

Start on the next ring 3ds-3ds now, unthread your needle, turn the needle around in your hand, so you are working on the eye side and using the needle thread (the one you just unthreaded NOT the thread from the ball) finish the ring with 3ds-3ds. Rethread the needle, slide the stitches off normally close ring and knot.

You might want to note that the tatting is reversed on one side of the ring. It is only noticeable at the picot so if you are fussy about those kinds of things, do the second half of the split ring with the tatting ds in reverse order than you normally do.

The instructions are great with the following exception:

Make the 3ds-3ds with the needle thread, reverse needle and unthread. Using thread from chain ball or other source, make 3ds-3ds on needle hole side. Rethread and close as usual.
This clarification would make it clearer. - Gale
