The spider has 2 sets of three joined rings inside the outline of the body. While the floating chains referred to are not split chains, they are very similar. The Floating chains are made by working with just the shuttle you are using as the ball thread.

You measure out a given distance along the thread (size 10, 1 inch ; 2 ½ cm) (size 80, ½ inch ; 1 ¼ cm), and at that point start tatting back along the thread, working the same as you would for the second half of a split ring (not transferring the knots to the other thread).

Once you have done the first ds, you can insert a safety pin in the very end of the leg to make it easier to hold on to.

Wind one pair of shuttles, using a continuous thread.

(First Group)
R 3ds, p, 7ds, p, 7ds. Cl R.
SR A 7ds, p, 7ds. SR B 3ds. Cl R
SR A 3ds, join to first p on first R, 7 ds. SR B 7ds. Cl R.

(Second Group)
SR A 10ds, p, 4ds. SR B 10ds. Cl R.
SR A 10ds, p, 10ds. SR B 4ds. Cl R.
SR A 4ds, join to P on first Ring of Group, 10ds. SR B 10ds. Cl R.

Work false picot to begin outline of body.
Ch 18ds, p, 2ds.
Join to small opening between First Group and Second Group of split rings.
Ch 2ds, join to p on previous Ch, *2ds.
Work floating chain of 16 ds (see above for chain length).
Repeat from * 3 times.
Ch 4ds.
Join to p on outside of first R in First Group, 8ds, p, 1ds, p, 8ds.
Join to p on second ring of group, 4ds.
*Work floating chain as before.
Ch 2ds.
Repeat from * 3 times.
P, 2ds.
Join to space between First Group and Second Group.
Ch 2ds, join to p on previous chain, 18 ds.
Join to outer p on second ring of Second Group.
20ds.
Join to false picot at the base of the beginning chain.
