| The Party Trick This is not something I would recommend you do at a party. In 1979 I was enjoying a few drinks with my friends and having a bit of fun, when I had the strongest urge to lay down on the floor. Which I did. As soon as my eyes closed I found myself sitting behind the steering wheel of a small Japanese car while it approached an intersection in the rain. To my right was a large dump truck skidding towards a collision at the intersection with the car I was in. Just before the smash I sat up and opened my eyes. At the same moment two teenage girls came into the room and asked if anyone wanted more alcohol from the liquor barn. I stood up and told them to beware of trucks ! They gave me the standard ' you are a weirdo look ' and walked out. I spent a horrific time after that, worrying and waiting to see if they would return. The two girls re-appeared at the party after 15 minutes and came straight to me. They wanted to know how I knew about the Truck so I avoided answering by asking them what had happened. As their car was about to enter the intersection the cars hood lifted up, forcing the girls to slow down carefully on the wet road just as the truck screeched through the intersection directly in front of them. They had missed the smash by less than a second, thanks to whatever force had protected them. Sometimes I wondered if Voicing the warning had played a role in the results. |
| You could imagine being at the party after doing a dramatic scene like the one just described. How everyone walks away from you, as if there must be some highly contagious disease hanging off you. Even the girls went on their way after they recovered with more alcohol to dull the senses, as did I. No one mentioned this episode ever again, as if it was Taboo. Understandably I tried harder to make sure this would never happen again, no repeats or re-runs for that show. And as the years rolled on I succeeded in turning this 'gift' off, much to the relief of my social life. I didn't want it and ignored it the best I could unless it overpowered me like this occassion and the Jumbo experience. |
