Tasmania .....

This island-of-eden IS the place where dreams are made. Geographically at the end of the earth. It has a fascinating history both human and natural. It is a very ancient land with some of the oldest rocks on earth. t is wild and windy in the Roaring 40's with a rather mild temperate maritime climate moderated by a cold sea.

It was once part of the great Gondwana land that joined Australia to Antarctica, South America, NZ, Africa and India. The legacy to that is seen to day in the ancient relics that exist in our flora and fauna. Tasmania has many relative plant species in South America and New Zealand.

Much of the landscape and flora owes more to these places than Australia. My home on the Wild West Coast has up to 70 per cent of its flora being entirely endemic. So there is much to make Tasmania unique. It is a rugged island with great contrasts of scenery and vegetation. It has dense rainforest  Alpine scree and near-desert plains.

The Aboriginal race that has inhabited this island is unique. Technologically nowhere near as advanced as the Mainland Aboriginals their society was very different cut off for 10,000 years after the last ice age cut the land bridge to the mainland . They survived this harsh climate with incredible fortitude and skill.

Tasmania will always be home. It is a wonderful captivating place of so much charm and character. It is however economically poor and the population is slowly declining. Like Ireland or Newfoundland one of its greatest exports is its people. No doubt I will return again and again to my place in the mountains and family. These pictures represent places that are special to me
