Some of you people want it more than the kids do! Stop living through your kids, and let them have fun. You parents spend a little money and now that makes you all experts. One thing about soccer in NY, ain't no parents saying a word! Because every NY nat ve understands, only thing parents do is pay money, watch the games, and get the kid to practice. Otha than that, you're useless! Stop whining and moaning, sit on the sideline and shut up for Gods sake! People sitting here worrying about polls and ranking , stats? It's easy for me: the winner is #1, loser #2, other than that who cares, your season was a joke. It makes me sick, ya kids are like prisoners, soccer 24 hours a day! And their parents are the experts. Look at yourselves!

Dave, your girls had a chance to be ranked 1 or 2 .All you had to do was win ! Your argument is a good one for the regular season but not when there is a final statewide tournament.Using your logic you could win the tournament and not be ranked #1.That's r diculous! The national rankings for any college sport doesn't do it that way, why would girls high school soccer? If you make to the finals and win , reguardless of your regular season record , you deserve to be #1. You can make an argument for whether th runner-up should be #2 but by winning games they made it to the finals. Comparing scores is not a good measure of two teams but a head-to-head is, if it's available.

First, very sorry to see this site terminated due to a situation beyond JR's control ... would be great if someone would come forward and get it online again in the near future. Hope the recent poll which drew so many comments can now be put to rest and other topics brought forth for discussion. I'll start with this one ... The final boys' and girls' polls are now on Coach Santiago Molina's site, and one should note that they are all rather cut and dry. The champions in every classification (boys and girls) are ranked number one, and the runners-up in every case are ranked second -- unanimously on the girls side, at least. But is that always right? I would like to make the point that in Class 2A, Seabreeze lost to eventual champion Gulf Breeze in the semi-final on the basis of penalty kicks after 100 minutes of scoreless soccer ... the only loss of the season for Seabreeze, which tied twice. Then Gulf Breeze proceeded to clobber Osceola in the final, 5-0. Their final record? 23-4-2! Now who should really have been ranked second? Let's be honest, now! There were other instances where a team losing to the eventual winner in the semi-final had a good case for being ranked second, but most of them left at least some room for discussion. Isn't it time to stop mandating the ranking of the winner and loser of each championship game at #1 and #2?

JR....I must question this poll, u were doing so well...who really cares who the coach of the year is? That is not the reason why we do this! I will sit this 1 out because my choice was not mentioned? Where's Tennian, was Bloomingdale 16-4-2 this year, di n't they win King!!! Don't let their absence from the state tourney fool you, he did an outstanding job as well. What's next a worse coach of the year? My staff is tremendous and we work extremely hard, sad thing is that assistants in this county dont mak any money and the head coaches get 1,200 for 5 months of work! $60 a week...minus $20 for gas...a bottle of tylenol $5 = $35 per week...which comes out to $5 per day! Not bad money huh? I'm disappointed in your marketing skills on this one JR. , u looked like a genius on the last one! A coaches poll? But i give you my word, no one in my computer class will vote for me, i will not e mail everyone on god's green earth to vote, and i will n t send a memo to everyone in my office to vote either...Every one of the coaches in this county deserve some credit because the one thing they are not doing it for: is the money! Of course..some put in more time than others, but almost every coach is ther to develop players and works hard. I'll say it again, this is a player's game: leave the coaches and parents out of it. The kids are the one's laying it on the line everyday.

JR: Don't suppose you will run a poll for High School Assistant coaches and one for Athletic Director's...now will you..... These people put in just as much time as the head coach and get absolutely NO RECOGNITION at all. Hell, in some cases without the Assistant coaches efforts there wouldn't be a team on the field. Got to agree with AB as far as "credentials" and polls having nothing to do with each other. Your voting for the best coach in the county. Should it matter that few of these coaches have had any formal training. Shouldn't make a difference if non-soccer people are voting, what the hell do they know. Hell with the individualization...players, coaches, etc.... Which program in the county has the TOTAL PACKAGE...players, coaches, adminisrators, FANS.. yes fans....there's a poll for ya...

Hi again JR, this is really getting amusing: i wish people would stop worrying who the best player is, "It doesn't matter who the best player is!" I mean is it tough to figure out that all these players, probably their parents are just getting whoever to ote..."go to this site and vote for my son"! Looking at your past polls and the # of people voting, it is clear to see that more than half of these votes are from people that don't even watch soccer: they are friends of the players involved! Do they think whoever wins this poll will be player of the year, i'll tell them for you....NO: the winner will not be player of the year, and the bottom line is, that it really doesn't matter! Everyone has an opinion, they are entitled to that: but be a realist, call a spade a spade....Anyone who knows soccer, knows that kid from Durant was the most dominant force during the year - a real class act as well. He got my vote because i call it like i see it! This is halarious, your past polls got an average of 25 votes, thi one is at 620 votes: doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out who is doing the voting. One positive about this poll JR., is your site is getting exposed...The negative is that it is very unrealistic, half the voters probably never watched a game or re parents! This is a players game, always has been ....always will be! Let the players play, the coaches coach, and the parents support: Boy how times have changed... My question is this...what is the prize for the person that wins this poll? Nothing, that's the prize...Will he be the times player of the year, NO and if he was, would there be any principle in that, this kinda stuff leaves me shaking my head! All for, "my son won the best player in the county poll"! Forget stats, box scores, and post season honors...just go out and play the game, train to be the best player you can be day in and day out! Be happy for the other kid not jealous of him...this is team sport, individuals go to the hall of fame, teams win championships! Brilliant work by you JR., this poll really put your site on the map...polls went from 20-30 votes to now at 600 and counting.

What's up JR...some nice comments here this past week, if they are legit then everyone at GHS respects that! I'll tell you now so u know for next year, We lose 6 seniors: 3 starting, Fernandez, Olmstead, and J Bourguignon... Again our goal is to be compet tve and go .500! Crazy rumors flying around: i'll just say it's kinda like a "rich get richer" type of thing...If you can't beat them, join em' i guess...again those are all rumors and I'll believe it when i see it next November! The beauty of high school soccer is you must work with what you got, it's not like club or college: where you can hand pick your team or you have the same group of kids from the age of 7 or 8! Every year is different as players come and move on...but the pride and the hard work do sn't change! I credit my kids for what they have accomplished, soccer is a player's game, it's not for the parents or coaches! Sure some parents and coaches can have a big influence on a player's life, but the player's are the one's that play the game! At GHS everyone as a whole realizes that and there is a lot of respect to the entire family! We are proud and happy for our teammate that made all-county or all-state not jealous of him, i see that so often and it's really sad. Anyone can wear a jersey, but nly a select few have worn the Blue and White! It starts from the top, discipline and hard work make you good...respect and teamwork make you great! It's been a great ride filled with a lot of great memories, if I'm fortunate enough to coach Gaither again we will do our best to be competitive! I read about all these people in here talk about next year...next year, i guess that's all they really can say now, but we will be prepared...we have a "wait till next year" too! The rich get richer, don't write che ks with your mouth, that your butt can't cash! Thanks JR for all your work, Mike,Eric, and Amanda too...AB

And for the record Sickles had only 1 legitimate player, and he will probably get red shirted at USF next year, if here can handle the big boys style of play...sure will be different for him seeing how his dad can't pick the team for him... This sport is a team game and always will be. No letter "I" in team....Teams win championships. Looks more and more like a Gaither year...

What's up JR? My pre-season rituals don't change, but we did lose everyone: is 10 seniors, 2 all-state players, 4 all-county players not everyone? I didn't lie, we just work very hard: no superstars, prepare like crazy and the boy's have fit into the syst m well! A lot of discipline and mental focus never hurts also. I heard enough about the Sickles game, get over it already...gesh! Excuse after excuse, and what kills me is they never leave their names: if u have a problem...come sit down and we can discus it-that's life. Sickles had a very good group of talented players, we have respect for every player on their team. It wasn't a Brandon Streicher incident that lost the game. In the King tourney it was because u were missing Pablo? Excuse #1... It wasnt t e fact that Gaither's coach scouted 4 of your games before that? It's called homework and it's just like school: if u don't do your homework, u fail! Honestly think about the crazy accusations about me getting a player thrown out? How can that happen, be ealistic here...If i wanted to get him thrown out wouldnt i do it at the beginning of the game, not in the 65th minute? Why would i tell a kid to take a dive, the ref to see it: give Brandon a red card...I dont think that is realistically possible young m n.I could just send a player in and say hurt him, get a yellow and come out...go back in, hurt him again, get your 2nd yellow and we still get to play with 11 players: doesnt that make more sense! Any person with a brain can figure that out... The fact of the matter is that i believe Brandon was guilty by association, Sickles got a bad reputation with the refs (who meet 2 times a month) and it was just a bad situation. 12 red cards in 1 year from 8 different players looks like a discipline problem to me, u had more red cards than wins! It starts from the top and that makes a program: not a one year wonder! Stop reaching for excuses, we lost 5-3 and shook the hands of every player...it wasnt the refs, the field, we simply got our butts kicked that night. To e a champion, u must train like one...that's everyday for 2 hours, some mornings at 6 AM, every saturday morning, not just when your coach feels like it! Practice is a lot more than world cuppies and scrimmaging, it's where u pay your dues as a player and prepare for your next game! Face the facts and call a spade a spade: your coach did not scout 1 game this year, name a training session where all your players were handed scouting reports or focused on a game plan. I'm so tired of all the excuses, at Gait er we dont claim to be the best and we respect everyone, we also work our tails off day in and day out! I'm from this area and want nothing but the best for every kid that plays! For you people to make some crazy excuses is ridiculous and shows a lack of lass on your part...You obvious dont know me as a person, i respect this game as it has provided me with some of the greatest experiences in my life. I'm simply giving back to the game what it provided for me, that's the least i can do. I enjoy working wi h players and watching them develop into mature young men...it's beyond soccer it's a lesson on life as well! Good luck to you and your Sickles team, i wish u the best in the years to come! 1.Hard work, 2. Commitment, 3. Preparation!!!!!

Any team can have a winning program for one season, but only a select few do it year in and year out: and those who know the game know who they are. JR,like the rest of your responses they only manage to tell half the story.First of all the programmer sold the program for 50 bucks which is why the kid and parents are mad. Then when the parents call him up mad demanding their money back ,the programmer red cards them) calls the cops trying to make the parents the bad guys. All the parents want is a product that works the way the programmer advertised. On your survey , explain to me how the parents are at fault. At fault for what! They sit in the stand .Give me a break!

JR - 02/14/00 17:57:25
Comments:
Imagine this: you are a software developer, and you accidentally write a bug in your program. Upon finding the error, a kid calls up and starts screaming at you and threatening physical violence. Then, his parents get on the phone and start screaming and cursing at you. Sounds pretty crazy, huh. No one should have to endure that sort of abuse just because they made a mistake on the job. I honestly don't think the refs are out there saying to themselves, "Hmm, how can I screw up this game and take out m frustrations on these kids.." Give me a break. They're just trying to do their job. Yes, they're going to make mistakes, and it's okay to voice your displeasure at them when they do, as long as it's done in the spirit of the game. I think you can wor the refs without being a poor sport about it. And this thing about going after the refs after the game is ridiculous. Come on--it's just a game.

GH - 02/14/00 09:32:49
Comments:
JR,you've got to be kidding but I'am not surprised.Let's blame the kids and the mom for the power hungry / incompetence of our referees. So let me get this straight,if a ref can't keep track of how many yellows I have and kicks me out of the game,I'm a poo sport if I get mad and let the ref know about it? That's ridiculous! It's about time we start making refs accountable, they're other part time jobs available.Hillsborough county officials point out that there is an increase in red cards/suspensions but wh n possible solutions are talked about the quality of the refereeing never seems to be consider the problem. Most of these problems on the field could be diverted if the refs cared more about the kidds and less about their egos! The school administration is quick to hold kids accountable for their actions , why not the refs. After all they are nothing but county employees. If you couldn't do your job you would be let go,why not let go the incompotent referees, the kids deserve better !And it is about the kids.

Not a very pretty sight last night when the mother of one of the River Ridge players went out on the field after the RR-Brandon game and started screaming at the referee that he was "a real @$$hole!" She had to be restrained and told by the school resour e officer that she was going to be cited for trespassing if she didn't leave. The team had started losing its cool at the end of the game when the finality of their situation was setting in. They started fouling pretty hard, and the referee tossed one pla er, saying that it was his second yellow, but it was really his first; so then, the ref showed a red card after the coach and player argued it. There was admittedly a bit of confusion, but then things got uglier when the player looked as if he were going fter the ref. Guess we know where he learned that from. He kept yelling at the ref after the game, and then mommy came to "help out." Seems like we are seeing more more and more of this crap lately. We wonder why the kids are such poor sports. It's b cause the parents are, too.

Here's what I like about Gaither: good team concept. They don't have any superstars, just a lot of good players. Yes, I picked them to finish last at the beginning of the year, but look at the district from top to bottom. Any one of those teams could ha e finished first or last. They're all good. I had to pick some order. Look at it this way--it was a motivational factor. Also, if you noticed the state poll, which I vote in, I voted for Gaither higher than Bloomingdale, Durant, or Sickles ever since Gai her blew out the Bulls 4-1 in January. So, it's not like I still picked Gaither to finish last at the *end* of the season.

Well what can i say it was a hard faught game. What really hurt me was that it was the last game of the best players in hillsborough county, the seniors. I thought that game really belong to us after that pk that brandon striecher took with 10 seconds left.Durant is a good team, but Sickles really des rved it.Well this is the end of our sickles team. it's going to be a hard season next year. be on the look out for me as I will be playing foward. I just want to wish all the sickles seniors good luck in the future and thanks it's been fun knowing you guy 2 years and it was a great experience playing with you guys especially when we beat gaither 5-3. Some awards.MVP Brandon Streicher. Most Succesful and last year's Hillsbrough county leading scorer Dustin Beach. Best dribbler great touch awesome shooter J an Hernendez.Great passer as well as shooting Jason Mendoza. Best defender and comedian of sickles # 19 Jimmy Bashor. great on and the field player Tim Burke. Best goalkeeper Jessy Fitzgerald exellent goalkeeper one of a kind.good player Seth V. good atti ude player jeff newton. Well all good things must come to an end. This is marky mark saying goodnight and see you on the fields next year.

Yikes! I don't think Countryside has EVER lost to Pinellas Park...how the mighty have fallen.
P.S. Hilarious at Sickes-Durant game last night: Sickles' #19 Jimmy Bashor got a yellow card, then mooned the ref as he was walking away. I saw his mom and t ld her after the game that we saw this from the press box. At first she denied it, then she said he must have just been adjusting his shorts, and then she said well, the ref deserved it. Aren't moms great!
Another reporter and I knew Beach was going to miss when we saw him walking up so slowly to take P.K. #10. I have been in and seen enough shootouts to know that the slower you walk up, the more you ice yourself. Take Durant's Kellie Evans in last year's estern Conference final. Slowest walk up there I've ever seen. And a miss from probably the county's best girls player. So, my advice: Run up to take your shot, or at least try to do it the same way you do it every time (like shooting free throws). Don t think too much about it.

JR I heard AB talking with some of his players talking before the game and his plan was to take brandon out of his game to get him a red card AB should be fired or they should do something about these hillsbrough county refs they really suck. The ref did ot even see the call, the linesman had to decide but with AB screaming at the linesman it made him rush so that's what probably gave brandon a red cards. I wish sickles had a coach who had the hookups with refs like Ab and the bloomingdale coach. Life jus sucks for the Sickles soccer squad. Good luck against bloomingdale tonight.Sickles is going all the way!!

Well, to be honest, I struggled with how to report the facts of this story. I typically don't report on what the fans said about the game. It's not really news. Now, if the coach made those allegations, it would be newsorthy. But Coach Rady did not make such allegations. In fact, he steered away from them. The Tribune reporter did not interview Coach Rady. On the other hand, Coach Bush vehemently denied the charges and said it was absolutely ridiculous that he would tell his players to cheat to get an opposing player out of the game--not to mention, a player on his own club team. I don't think AB is the kind of coach to cheat like that. Whether the incident was really a dirty play on Crampton's part, I can't say because I wasn't down there. But I re lly don't think AB had anything to do with it.

The Gaither squad is all about if we can't win let's che t.i used to have respect for gaither but after this happened i don't give a sh** about them.after brandon was kicked off the fat b**** assistant had the nerve to laugh it was a setup. the kid who faked the injury should be in alot of trouble and i give h m an oscar for that marvelous acting performance.Don't worry sickles is going all the way!

My prediction is coach Bush will tell one of his players to do one of the most repugnant things I've ever heard of,fake an injury to get an opposing player red carded. The Trib. didn't have a problem mentioning the incident but you did even though you were standing next to all parties involved after the game. Don't you think if a coach has ruined the integrity of high school soccer,he should be removed? Because these allegations are so serious they should at least be investigated!

I guess the poll about who can beat Jesuit is moot now. I told another reporter on Friday that Jim Harte would have a special game plan in mind for the Tigers, and he did. He is definitely a brilliant tactician, although he has on occasion experimented o much with CCC's lineup that the players heave no clue what they're supposed to do. Sounds like they figured it out on Saturday, though.

JR, you are right about Marn winning the State title. He was fortunate enough to have some outstanding players on his team. As a matter of fact they were so good the were able to win in spite of having him as the coach.

JR - 01/04/00 21:57:37
Comments:
I did not see Coach Marn's remarks, so I can't comment. However, it sounds a little like Mike Ditka at New Orleans. He said none of the blame for the team's poor performance should be on him, that it was the players who weren't playing well. Well, obvio sly, that sort of thing doens't fly with the media, the fans, or the players. It's a team effort, and the coach is part of the team. It sounds like Coach Marn needs to dig into his considerable bag of coaching tricks and coax some more effort out of the e guys. I think he's a pretty good coach, and he has a state title under his belt; so I think he will probably find a way to do it.

Nice comments by marn in the st. pete times, always a good idea to blame players for a coaches own ineptitude. Poor decisions and lack of speed can be coached if he knew what the heck he was doing. So his point was his team sucks and he can't do anything about it? Must make his players feel real good to read his thoughts in the paper. But they shouldn't feel bad. Last year he was state 5a coach of the year, had 3 all-state players on his roster as well as 6 other top quality seniors and still couldn't win the district. Whats up with that? Problem is he doesn't have as many top club players as he used to and his lack of coaching ability is becoming very obvious. Knocking his players in the paper instead of accepting responsibility as the head coach is par f r the course with that bozo.

What did I say about bloomingdale and gaitor first we played excellent soccer against gaithor best i seen in school history beating them 5-3 their were some nice goals from brandon streicher and Dustin you know the usuall we were up in the first half we w re winning 3-0 and then in the second they scored 3-1 then they score againmaking it 3-2 then we scored 4-2 then we scored again 5-2 then with about 1 min left they scored to end the game 5-3 Allan Valderrama had a great assist to brandon's goal I almost cored too. 3 days later we were playing bloomingdale #7 in nation is what they say, anyways they were leading the first half 2-0. In the second half about in the 15min Carlos P. scored a beautiful header an assisted corner by brandon 2-1 a min later anoth r corner to Carlos P. 2-2 about 16min later dustin dribbled down the middle of field when he got tripped on top of the box. Brandon had the best freekick i ever seen we also had the best celebration in the school's history. it was now 3-2 us then about 4 in left they did a two touch in the box and scored it was now 3-3 tied 2 min left a perfect pass to Jason Mendoza one on one against the keeper and shoots the game winning goal wide he told me he was going to dream about that one. Well so long this is mar y mark saying buenas Noches.

I don't have anything against Sickles. I think they're a good team. Beach, Streicher, Moore are all good players. Just quit making excuses. EVERY team has injuries, suspensions, graduations, etc. You have to adjust and compensate for these. If Sickle can't get out of its own district, which is certainly a daunting task, then it cannot show how good it is. P.S. Maybe. It looks like Jesuits schedule is just right for a undefeated season and all kinds of records broken.Coincidence? I think not.
