THE SPIRIT FILLED MAN
Sermon of TBOLF by Br. R.L. Ravichandra
John 4:14 but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life."
John 7:38-39 Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him." By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus bad not yet been glorified.
Out of him streams or the rivers of living water will flow.
This speaks that the water signifies the Holy Spirit. If we apply this meaning to the rest of the scripture in the Gospel of John. .then we understand the two aspects of the Holy Spirit: (1) Indwelling Spirit (Jn 4:14)(2) Out flowing Spirit (Jn 7:38)
When we speak about the Holy Spirit, always His power is attributed to signs, wonders and the works of power, but the word speaks
that His main work is mostly in our inmost being. (Jn 7:38)In
this area most of are powerless. We might control our actions outwardly but deep in our being we fail in our emotions, attitudes, reactions and responses. Then we cry out saying "what a wretched man that I am?" in despair. This is where the power of the Holy Spirit works in our lives to help us to overcome the situations. "In him springs of the living water, out of him the streams of living water."In the book of Acts, we are assured of the power by the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:8). When looking at Peter or Paul, their preaching and the miraculous works of power, we often think
that the power is needed for such spectacular manifestations of great works. Also if we notice there are lesser characters in the book of Acts who are also the men of the Spirit. Though there are no much importance about them or any recorded messages of theirs or any epistles written by them, yet they are also portrayed as the people of power and Spirit.A good example to explain one of such persons is ‘PHILIP’. There are only three (3) chapters that speak about him in Acts. (chapters 6, 8 and 21) We don’t find here Philip in action with power and signs but as a man full of the Holy Spirit.
Often our actions are manifested in lot of noise, actions of aggressiveness in the prayer meetings
, behind the pulpit and in public, but the power of the Spirit leads us, to be what he wants us to be. **to do what he wants us to do., to endure what he wants us to endure. If his purpose for you to be housewife, that is what he wants you to be. He will not make me to become what he doesn’t intend me to be.
Now we find Philip in 3 chapters in three different circumstances. First in "A Difficult Situation" - Let us read Acts 6:3-5
Philip - full of Holy Spirit. There are lot of misunderstanding about this term. It is basically the person Holy Spirit Fills a person like us.
Philip is introduced to a group of people in problematic situation. - Acts 6:1
Problem between Greek speaking Jews and Aramaic speaking Jews (sons of the soil). They are racially the same but culturally and linguistically different. One is in the leadership (naturally), We thought there was no problem in the early church, but right in the beginning we see the problem.
One group is against the pastor and the other one is for him. When we listen sympathetically to the complain we might become emotionally involved. The problem in relationship is the real problem in the church, fellowships and prayer meetings. If you say you don’t have such problem then you must be something special. That is why someone said "To live in heaven with the saints that we love is glory. but to live with the saints we know on the earth below is another story."
So when there is a problem in relationship, a group might come with murmur and complain. Listening to them might cause us to act emotionally. Emotions play a great deal in our lives. Often we find that the emotions dictate words. To handle this - we need to keep our emotions under the control of the mind which is in Christ.
Col 3:2 Set your
minds on things above, not on earthly things.Phil 2:5 Have
this mind in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:Rom 12:2b Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.
Romans Chpt. 8
speaks about the Spirit controlled mind.We cannot be full of
murmuring and at the same time full of the Holy Spirit. Either we will be under the influence of our emotions or the Spirit. If you have the problem in relationship and become angry, touchy and over-sensitive, you need the Holy Spirit. Also if we are to handle a problem such as that with someone, we need the Holy Spirit to handle. Philip was a man helped those people to find a solution. Are we the people of solution or of problem? Some of us become the part of the problem instead of solution.A Depressing Situation
- Let us read Acts 18:1.Philip must have well settled in Jerusalem and when the persecution started he had to flee leaving every thing behind. His nest was disturbed, nad he was thoroughly upset. Very depressing situation. When a situation comes to us how do we respond? Nowadays it is becoming popular to tell about our trials and difficult times even the experiences. Philip also could have done the same thing to win the sympathy of others. Instead what did he do?
-
Read Acts 8:4-5Here we find Philip was preaching the good news in spite of his depressing situation as he was
full of the Holy Spirit. He was spilling Christ and His gospel as he was fleeing. ‘What spills out of you when you are tilted is what is filling you."The adverse situations or depressing situation let the others to know
what is filling us. Is there bitterness, hatred and discontent or sweetness of the Holy Spirit? In a situation like
this Holy Spirit helps us to endure. It might sound strange as we think He is for power for achievements. (Read - Col 1:11)Yes, His power is for endurance. It may be an anti-climax to many of us.
Now as we move little further we find Philip was summoned by the Holy Spirit to leave Samaria where he was involved in a very effective
ministry bringing many to the kingdom of God, to go to Gaza through wilderness. The road was a desert road. (Acts 8:26)Again another depressing situation in the middle of fruitful situation. Yet he obeyed. He was told to do something but not everything. Even in our lives when we are to obey God even when we are not be
given all the details of God’s plan. It would have been easy for Philip to obey God if he was told that he was going to meet a great Ethiopian official. When Philip obeyed and the Holy Spirit was with him. It was a wilderness experience. At the end of it he was told by the Spirit, why he was brought through that experience. Until then it was a suspense. Our God sometimes hides the surprise around the corner. He creates the Springs in the valley and the streams in the wilderness. He is a God of surprises.Domestic Situation (Read Acts 21:8,9)
Philip is now
known as an Evangelist. He had Four unmarried daughters. The bible says some thing special about them. They were unmarried not due to any accident, but they were consecrated to serve the Lord as prophetesses. If they have dedicated themselves for God, it is implied that Philip was a man of testimony at his home. Being full of Holy Spirit in his family life he bad set himself an example as a model husband to his wife and a father to his daughters, which drove his daughters to choose to serve the Lord whom their father was serving. The power of the Holy Spirit is always manifested in loud noise, boisterousness and in great activity at the pulpit or on a platform. But when it comes to home it is the power but of the Holy Spirit. (Read Eph 5:18)
Ephesians Chapters 5 and 6 speak about to be full of the Holy Spirit and then
speaks about the relationship about the wives, husbands and the children. To conduct ourselves as real husbands, wives and children we need to be full of the Holy Spirit. What is to be done?
- Holy Spirit is a perfect gentleman. He will not force his way through. It is we, who should deliberately and decisively yield ourselves towards Him for the Spirit to take control of us. A total surrender and submission to His authority whether that is a difficult situation, a depressing situation or domestic situation and he will make us to do hiswill to bring glory to the name of God. Then the Spirit in you becomes the Spirit who flows out of You as a river.
‘IN HIM SPRINGS OF WATER AND OUT OF HIM RIVERS OF WATER". Amen.
