This third installment of the Bloosport series stars Daniel Bernhardt reprising the roll of Alex Cardo. The film begins with Alex waking from a dream of his hard won victory in Bloodsport 2. It is not a pleasant dream. Having awakened from the nightmare he wonders through his house and realizes that his 10 year old son Jason is still awake. Jason confesses that he is still up on a school night because he's been suspended from school for fighting. Alex sees this as an opportunity to tell the boy of his previous victories in the Kumite. He takes his son on a week long camping trip that is part exercise in martial arts and part story telling. Alex begins his story after he has won the Kumite from the second film and is now a successful gambler and no longer fighting. It's in a casino that he is introduced to Mr. Duvalier, a very rich and powerful man who is staging the next Kumite. Duvalier wants Alex to enter the fight because he has a "ringer" in the form of a man called "The Beast". Alex tells Duvalier that he will not fight in the Kumite, but Duvalier won't take "no" for an answer and has Master Sun (James Hong) killed to drive Alex to fight. Lost and unsure what he should do, Alex asks Leung (Pat Morita) for advice. Leung directs Alex to Master Atakado(Grandmaster Hee Il Cho), the judge from the previous Kumite. Atakado, who confesses that he's Sun's brother, advises and trains Alex at his country farm. The plan is to be a better and stronger fighter. Once that is achieved Alex will enter the Kumite at the last minute and hopefully spoil Duvalier's large bet on The Beast.
OK, this is where I throw in MY two cents...Let me just start by saying that Daniel Bernhardt is a FINE athlete. He obviously works hard on his body and his form. Of course I'm a FAN, it's my web page! But this movie lacked so many things, like continuity and plot. First of all, are we to assume that Alex and Janine (from from the second film) had a child by the name of Jason? If so, where's Janine? And why is Alex now a gambler and not the art dealer he was? It's obvious that the writer/director/producer was looking for a James Bond thing here (especially the casino scenes), but they just didn't pull it off. The one thing this movie wasn't lacking was bad singing! Good lord, who let that woman sing? And who is she related to that she was allowed in this film? It was all I could do to stop my ears from bleeding! I DID like the training scenes with Atakado and his niece Sheri, but why couldn't the writer/director/producer let Alex and Sheri have a thing? They came SO close in the hot tub scene and then WHAM, all of a sudden they feel like sibilings. What the...? The actual fighting scenes during the Kumite weren't as good as BS2, especially that Beast guy who was more of a hulking figure than a seasoned fighter. With all of his lumbering around a good tripping was all it would take to make this guy go down! In my opinion BS2 was a better film in terms of plot and fighting sequences. |
