STORY: : While homesteaders prepare for the Oklahoma land rush, lawyer Dick Hudson hears shots. He takes cover until he discovers the rifleman is a young boy, Barty Walton, who he chastises for his carelessness, but his sister Jane comes to his defense. While they are talking, Link Carter, a man Dick tried to put in prison, interrupts the conversation. Dick learns that George Walton and his children are traveling with Carter. Dick is traveling with his friends Ruth and Tom Valley, and makes a friend of Barty. Janie overhears Carter and his friends plotting to keep Dick out of the landrush. She tries to tell him, but he misinterprets her warning, so she lames his horse to keep him out of danger. This keeps him from staking a claim. Carter, on the other hand has staked claim to almost all the land in town. Dick accuses Carter of being a "sooner" (starting before the official starting gun.) With the help of friends he starts up a Law Office. Losing most cases against Carter’ fixed juries, Dick goes into the cattle business with the Valleys and their partner Bill Tidwell. George Walton (Billy’s father) quits as acting mayor, when he learns that Carter and his men are planning to steal the cattle. Barty overhears everything and tells Dick, who rides out to the heard. Barty follows him, sees Dick and the rustlers exchange gunfire and rushes to town to get help. Walton and Dick make a plan to capture Carter once and for all. Walton is shot during the "Jubilee Dance" by Carter’s men. Dick out-shoots one of Carter’s gunmen, but Carter kills Tom. The crowd wants to lynch Carter, but Dick insists on a fair trial. Carter is found guilty and sentenced to death. Walton can now act as mayor of the town in their best interests.
