2004 GIRLS TCIS CHAMPIONSHIP
The girls TCIS championships was extremely close this year, and it had many extremely competitive events with good marks.  Norfolk Academy did not really have a comfortable lead until the last few events.  Greenbriar's Zipporah McCann, who is just a sophmore, had a huge day, capturing the meet triple jump record and winning the long jump along with numerous high places in other events.  Suzanne Ginnow doubled the 1600 and the 3200 setting the meet record in the latter.  Heather Ireland won both throwing events with impressive marks as well.  There were several high scorers in the girls meet: Lindsey Bowman(BSC) 43.5, Zipporah McCann(GCA) 42.5, Sara Rainey(NA) 31, Evette Edwards(PC) 30.5, Elizabeth Cherry(NA) 28, Heather Ireland(NA) 22, and Suzanne Ginnow(CH) with 20.
100M: At the beginning of the spring most people would have said this was going to be between Sara Rainey and Zipporah McCann.  Well everyone except for maybe Coach Lampert who had already had a season to see 9th grader Elizabeth Cherry's speed.  Cherry blazed a 12.80fat time in the finals, easily beating her opponents.  The time would probably be around 12.5 hand and tie her for the meet record.  While Cherry easily won the event, Greenbriar dominated the event, with Zipporah McCann taking second, Justyn Dowdy taking third, and Tiffany Wilson taking 4th.  Tate(CH) and Rowland(BSC) were a far off 5th and 6th.
200M: Justyn Dowdy was the defending champion in the 200, Elizabeth Cherry was the reigning champion in the 100, but both would run the 2 slowest qualifying times, sticking Cherry in lane one, and Dowdy in lane 6.  Dowdy had a good start, Cherry did not.  It set up an interesting situation, Cherry using her leg speed to chase down everyone, but the 2 so far apart that they could not really see each other.  Dowdy barely held off Cherry in a photo finish.  Greenbriar once again came out on top for the event with Zipporah McCann taking third and  Brenna Dennis(GCA) taking 4th. Taber(BSC) was 5th.
400M: This was a close fight between Evette Edwards of PC and Kate Taber of BSC.  Edwards would win with a 61.65 to Tabers 62.70.  The rest of the girls were over 67.  Branch(CH) and a pair of Walsingham girls Shaw and Cairns went 3-4-5.  Dennis(GCA) took 6th.
800M: This race matched up Caitlin McHugh(PC), who took second to meet record holder Ashley Hughes last year, against newcomer Christi Morressey(NA).  McHugh went out blazing, running her first 300 in 46-47.  Morrissey was a good 40m back on the 3rd curve but started to close the gap.  Morrissey flew by on the last curve and ended up winning by 30-40m with a 2:27.60.  Susan Gibbs(GCA) was alone at 3rd as was J. Mulhare(W) for 4th.  Kate Hixon, a former TCIS champion at both 1600 and 800 battled through chronic knee pain to edge out M. Mulhare(W) for 5th.
1600M: Suzanne Ginnow(CH) was the TCIS cross country champion and started her sweep of the Outdoor track distance races in the 1600M.  Morrissey(NA) and McHugh(PC) tried to hold tight early on but Ginnow ran pretty even splits and seperated from the pack to leave no doubt in this one.  Her time of 5:26 was the fifth best in meet history.
3200M: Ginnow finished her sweep of TCIS distance races for 2003-2004 by setting the TCIS record for the 3200M with an 11:55.  This one was never in doubt, and the next finisher was nearly a minute behind her.  The Norfolk Academy distance girls picked up 4th through 6th to help seal their victory over GCA.
100MH: Lindsey Bowman(BSC) had an outstanding meet, sweeping the hurdles, taking second in the high jump while tying the meet record, 2nd in the long jump by a half an inch, and 3rd in the triple jump.  She won this one with relative ease but there was a 3 way dog fight for the next spot.  Heather Gerum(W), Sara Rainey(NA), and Ursela Cruz(PC), finished within a 7 hundreths of a second time frame.
300MH: Sara Rainey came into this event the TCIS 300MH record holder with a swift time of 47.9.  She left with her record but without the win.   This race was extremely close until the last 50 meters or so, when Sara struggled at a hurdle and Lindsey Bowman was able to get by and finish her sweep of the hurdles for the day.  The rest of the field was not too impressive, but freshman Rebekah McCann did pick up valuable points at 3rd.
Field Events.
The field events in the 2004 TCIS meet were some of the most competitive ever.  The big performer of the day was Greenbriar's Zippora McCann.  McCann first won the Long Jump with an impressive 16' 10.5" jump.  But then she smashed All-American Jennifer Byrd(NA class of 2001)'s triple jump record to set the new record at an impressive 36' 6.5".  She also took 3rd in the high jump with a jump of 4' 10".  McCann had heavy competition in the Long Jump.  Lindsey Bowman(BSC) missed her by a half an inch, and Sara Rainey(NA) jumped 16' 5".  Elizabeth Cherry(NA) took 4th with a solid jump of 15' 4" which could have won the meet in some years.  Christine Sargent(NA) took fifth with 14' 8" and  Evette Edwards(PC) finished the scoring at 14' 3".  McCann, Bowman, and Rainey had the 3rd, 4th, and 8th all time meet marks.  In the triple jump, Sara Rainey's very solid 33' 4.5" jump was overshadowed as was Lindsey Bowman's 33' 3rd place jump.  Rebekah McCann, Christine Sargent, and Cierra Jackson(GCA) filled in the rest of the places all with jumps over 30'.  In the High Jump, Katie Warren(HRA) calmly went miss-free till the bar was moved to 5-2 and finished tying the meet record of 5'.  Lindsey Bowman lost on misses, but also tied the meet record.  Zipporah McCann cleared 4'10" for 3rd and Elizabeth Cherry continued to be the best Freshman girl with a 4th place jump of 4' 8".
The weights were dominated by Heather Ireland, who won both the shot(32' 2.5") and the discus(100' 6.5") with solid top-10 all-time meet marks.  Evette Edwards from PC took both second place finishes.
