The Monkees Presenting, "Say You'll Be Mine!"
By Coral
Disclaimer: Star Trek belongs to Paramount, as if we didn't all know that already! And if they did cut parts of 'Resolutions', they'd better watch out! 'Say You'll Be Mine' (the song) is by Steps and is copyrighted to them, I guess. The Monkees belong to... The Monkees?
Note: This is what comes of having a Steps Addict in your house. If you haven't heard any of Steps songs, then you won't know how truly annoying they can be! I seriously hate this song but can't get it out of my head...!
"Is that really... an ancient legend?" Kathryn asked with a hint of a smile as her eyes started to mist over.
"No, but that made it easier to say," Chakotay explained, almost shyly. He took Kathryn's hand as a strain of music wafted over the night air to them...
"Baby I was hypnotised,
When I looked into your eyes,
Saw the love I'd been waitin' for."
For a moment, Chakotay thought that maybe he was just imagining it, dredging up the words from his memory because they seemed so apt to the occasion.
"Couldn't help but fantasise,
'Bout a world where you and I
Stay together forever more..."
New Earth was all he'd dreamed of for the past two years or so. A chance to be alone with Kathryn, without work, duty or protocol to interfere. The only thing on this planet that could come between them was the monkey, but Chakotay couldn't care less about him.
"Don't hesitate, 'cos I can't control my feelings,
Just can't wait, now I know where this is leadin'."
That was true too. Chakotay was rapidly approaching the point where he needed to take Kathryn in his arms and tell her how much he loved her.
"Baby please, this heart's on the line,
Don't waste this precious time, Say you'll be mine."
"It's not hard to do, just tell me you feel it too.
Baby it's time, say you'll be mine.
Any time he spent with Kathryn was precious. He looked at her again. Something in her eyes told him that she was hearing this too, and as she recognised the look in his eyes and realised that it wasn't just her imagination. But how? They were alone here on New Earth, just the two of them and a monkey.
"Took a spark to start the fire,
Fan the flame of my desire,
Turn the light on my destiny."
A year ago, maybe even six months ago, Kathryn could never have envisaged herself in this position. She'd thought that she loved Mark with everything she had, but it was nothing compared to what she felt for Chakotay now. She felt content as if she'd finally found her place in life.
"An' it took me by surprise,
All the love I felt inside,
Now I know it was meant to be."
Chakotay believed in fate, that some things were just meant to be. But the force of his own love for Kathryn had surprised him. After his bad experiences in the past, he hadn't imagined ever feeling like this again. He rose and went round to where she was sitting, lost in thought.
"An' step by step, I can feel how close we're getting;
Can't stop yet, 'cos I know where this is headin'."
Unable to resist his feelings any longer, Chakotay kissed her, knowing where this was heading. She responded to him as the music continued floating in from the open door.
"Baby please, this heart's on the line,
Don't waste this precious time, Say you'll be mine."
"It's not hard to do, just tell me you feel it too.
Baby it's time, say you'll be mine.
Say you'll be mine."
The music seemed to be getting louder, as if someone was walking closer with the speakers. Chakotay realised belatedly that the door was open. The two pulled out of the kiss, turning to the doorway.
"Say you'll be mine, say you'll be mine."
A group of monkeys walked in the door. Chakotay realised that the leading monkey was the one that had been popping a lot in the past few weeks, since the bathtub incident. But now, he was smartly dressed, just like the others.
"Say it, all you gotta do is say it,
Say it, all you gotta do is say it.
You're the one I've been waiting for..."
Kathryn and Chakotay looked quizzically at the monkeys, who were continuing their chorus line over and over again.
"Say you'll be mine.
Baby it's time, say you'll be mine!"
"What's going on here?" Kathryn demanded shakily.
"Who are you?" asked Chakotay at almost exactly the same time.
"Hey, hey, we're the Monkees!" the group of monkeys proclaimed in singsong voices before grinning and parading back out of the shelter. Kathryn ran to the door, but they had disappeared in the shadows cast by the bright moonlight coming from above.
"Well I never..." Kathryn said wonderingly, turning back to Chakotay who came and joined her at the door.
"How about it, Kathryn? Say you'll be mine?"
"Always," she promised as he kissed her once again. And, from the bushes, the monkeys watched.
