who
did not do well on the test have not been handing in homework.

Read book when you get to relative lecture example,
type it in, make some changes see what happens and also
try writing your own versions of the programs.
The graph demonstrates a clear disjoint in tests grades.
The high percentage of A and B's is due to the review nature of test1.
75% of test 1 covered material in CIS111 (i.e., Chapters 1-7). When coupled
with the two week
review of chapters 1-7, it would be expected that many students would fare
well. The grades below 84% represents students who either have difficulty with
written vs computer
oriented tests or have not yet mastered CIS111 fundamentals.
Since this type of tests provides a good preparation for the type of tests you
will
see at UCSD. The students who didn't fare well will have the opportunity to
develop the proper test
taking skills they may need in the future. To help these students along, I'm:
(1)Dropping the lowest test score
(2)Providing ways to get extra points on test 1 (refer to homework assignment 11)
(3)Assigning written self test questions from the text book
It is also clear that students scoring below 60% have not yet mastered sufficient
CIS111 programming skills.
The book gets progressively harder. Therefore it is imperative to have a thorough
understanding of
of the beginning chapters before you can comprehend chapters 8 and up. To remedy
this situation students
who received a grade below 60% have the option of increasing their test 1 score
by doing programming assignments from
from chapters 1-3. It is imperative that you do these assignment from scratch
on your own, in order to
master skills that you need in order to comprehend the second half of the Java
book. For this list of
test 1 extra credit assignments refer to CIS111
homework assignments.
