Improving Success in 1st 15 Credit Hours

RDG/AS: Hybrid Courses Linked Learning Communities (half class time and half online instruction) for students at the upper end of the upper developmental course (RDG 030) and a first-year experience course (GE 101). Example: Tuesday classes will be taught in class and the rest of the week will be devoted to online learning. Specifically the goal is to improve entry-level content reading skills, learning independence, as well as collaborative skills, and to positively promote critical thinking, decision-making, problem solving and life/career/educational planning.

Additional value: This provides flexibility of scheduling for students and opens up two scarce classrooms at peek times. Contact: Dan Kesterson or Maria Galyon

RDG/AS: Linked Learning Communities - All developmental reading classes involve two or more classes linked thematically or by content which a cohort of students takes together. All the developmental reading courses are linked by at least one other course which focuses on improving the likelihood of student retention and academic success, while increasing student involvement and motivation, and enhancing student intellectual development. The lowest level reading class is paired with a vocabulary/concept development class. The two upper developmental classes are paired with a freshmen-year seminar class. Pedagogical emphasis is on interpersonal dialogue, collaboration, and experiential learning within the context of diversity. These programs address a decreasing sense of community and connection and allow students to relate their college-level learning to larger personal and global questions. Contact: Dan Kesterson
