As a member of LoNAF I've helped design many of the logos used on the site. This page shows a few of them and the process of the design.
LoNAF had been around for a couple of months when I joined and had quite a basic logo, I think it was a simple title at the top of the page. The decision was made by the administration that there should be a graphical logo instead, and so a competition was started. These are some of my entries and the one that was eventually chosen. The only restriction was that it had to have the full name as opposed to an abbreviation.
This was using a Klingon font and bit too much feathering. The font is kinda hard to read and the feathering makes it more blurry, so this certainly wasn't the best attempt. But it was the first, if that's any excuse. :-)
Again, I was slightly too enthusiastic with the special effects. These sorts of experiments are useful though, this might give me an idea in the future that I wouldn't have had otherwise.
Now this is one of my favourites, I think it looks stylish and professional and the colours go just right with LoNAF's scheme. The TNG font doesn't look out of place either, which it sometimes can since it's quite elaborate.
This one was made by selecting the text separately from the background and simply painting orange and red blobs on it to simulate explosions. I'm not sure if I like it or not, but it was used later on at LoNAF as the basis for another logo, so it can't be that bad. Again, a Trekkish font was used.
More or less the same, only with ships and explosions which signify the eponymous "fleets" of the league. Yup. The ships were on a slightly see-through layer so they wouldn't make the writing too difficult to read. The one on the left is a lovely Akira and on the right is a Steamrunner as featured in LoNAF's RPG "Agamemnon"(although that wasn't a twinkle in Steve-O's eye back then). As I said, this was used as a direct basis for Lonny's other main logo.
A few more designs, I don't think I showed these at the time, they're all quite basic.
This is another that I didn't enter into the competition and I have no idea why, I really like it.
This is the last logo(all of the ones on this page are in the order they were originally made) and it's also the one that was finally voted the best and chosen as LoNAF's first logo. I think I pinched the explosion in the background from an episode of Trek, which I then added motion blur and more colour to. I also pasted it into the embossed text using a see-through layer. If I'd done that today I would've made my own explosion effect.
A similar version but without the explosion and with different effects on the words. I made quite a few variations on the final design. |
