In 1906 Penn State's student body chose the mountain lion to be used as the University's athletic symbol. While mountain lions used to roam central Pennsylvania, just any old mountain lion can't represent Penn State. Only a very special lion can protect and serve this great institution. With the campus positioned on Nittany Valley, and the base of Mount Nittany, a Nittany Lion is the natural, powerful choice.
